Show 13-Year Old Scout Falls To Death Off Bald Mountain The badly broken body of a 13-year-old Boy Scout from North Centerville, Davis County, Coun-ty, who fell 400 feet to' his death, Tuesday at about 3 p.m., was removed Wednesday from the steep east face of 11,947 ft. Bald Mountain, near Mirror Lake. Killed was Walton Ford, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walton Ford. He had gone to Camp Steiner with a group of Boy Scouts for a week's outing. The camp is located at Mirror Lake. Four experienced climbers from Salt Lake City's Wasatch Mountain Club recovered the body at about 6:30 a.m. and carried it out over rugged peaks on the Duchesne County side of Bald Mountain. The climbers left Salt Lake at 3:30. a.m. and arrived at the place where the boy's body was found at 6:30 and had carried it to a mountain moun-tain road by 9 a.m. Officials at the Boy Scouts' Camp Steiner near here said the victim was throwing rocks from the mountain top. One of the rocks became stuck in a crack near the mountain's edge. The boy attempted to remove the rock, lost his balance and fell over the sheer 1,250 ft. face. Horton Hess, Sr., acting scoutmaster, scout-master, who was with the Scouts when the accident occurred oc-curred Tuesday about 12:30 p.m., attempted to reach the body Tuesday. He sent Scouts for help and Collins Thompson, a workman with the Bureau of Public Roads, came to the scene. He reached the body, but it was decided to wait for experienced exper-ienced climbers before attempting attemp-ting to remove it. |
