Show THE AMERICAN WAY i j, lf 1 SOCIALIST VSN PLOT George Peck Many, many times in my column col-umn during the past thirteen years I have sounded a warning warn-ing against the Federal Government's Gov-ernment's invasion of the elec-( trie power field. Repeatedly, 1 have stated that nationalization of this public utility is the first steppingstone, the entering wedge toward the socialists' dream of a completely socialized United States of America. There was no excuse for gov eminent "muscling in" on the manufacture and distribution of electric power. By and large the privately-owned companies were giving a good account of themselves, ' had done a magni-ficant magni-ficant job of providing power to the American public giving ever-better service at ever-decreasing rates. Those privately- owned companies that so far have been spared the governmental govern-mental axe continue to serve the public efficiently and economically. ec-onomically. They continue to pay taxes into, the while government govern-ment power projects syphon money out of the public chest. Colonel C. W. Leihy, publisher publish-er of "Electric Light and Power," Pow-er," a privately-owned monthly trade magazine, in a recent report, re-port, exposed this invasion of the power industry for what it really is a plot to socialize the leading businesses of the country, first inaugurated by the Socialist Party, He quoted from a pamphlet issued by the Socialist Party I in 1923, as follows: "States un-I un-I der the direction of this socialist social-ist program, and finally the na-I na-I tlon, will take over one after the Other, the public utilities, mines, railroads, power plants, communication systems, waterways water-ways and forests." Colonel Lelhy then quoted from a statement made in 1937 which appeared in one of the public ownership publications. It reads; "Step by step this plan which the Public Ownership1 League presented and published fifteen years ago is being surely and steadily realized." In his report, Colonel Leihy points out how the present proposed pro-posed Federal subsidized power pow-er authorities, such as the Columbia Co-lumbia and Missouri, fit into the nation wide socialized scheme. Said he: "The attack against free enterprise en-terprise in the power business is not based on the shortcomings or failure of business-managed companies to provide the public with adequate service at fair rates. It is deeply rooted in the philosophy of those who seek a nationalized, politically - controlled con-trolled monopoly on the country's coun-try's economy in place of the free choice, competitive system that has made America great." Continuing, he issued a warning warn-ing and gave this advice: The electric power industry, as the first main target of the socialist planners, is the first place to bulwark the free enterprise enter-prise system against the continued contin-ued erosion of democratic institutions insti-tutions by advocates of the welfare wel-fare state." How right Colonel Leihy is! If Federal Government is "cooking "cook-ing up" a power project for your section of the country, let your Congressman and Senators know that you prefer- to buy your "juice" from a privately-owned privately-owned company. On the other hand, if no project pro-ject is plotted for your particular particu-lar vicinity, serve notice on your legislators that you have a great aversion to being forced to pay part of the cost of furnishing furn-ishing "juice" to citizens in other oth-er parts of the nation. |
