Show Mm &jjM To Qypras 19-21 Izi Semi- iMd Tcun tears itself With Slory . Union High School's fighting football aggregation last Friday almost proved that Barnes are won by points and not by yardage, yard-age, as they held the hig'hly touted, and odds-on favorite Cyprus Cy-prus team to a 19-21 score, and for more than three quarters of the game lead the Pirates. It was not until the final few minutes min-utes that the Magna team was able to erase Union's lead and win by two precious conversion points. Statistically, the Eldon Wright coached team, which was playing play-ing in its first class B football competition was overwhelmed by Cyprus as the Pirates rolled 287 total yards from rushing and passes to 109 for Union, and made 19 first downs to 3 for the local kids. But the ability of Union to capitalize on breaks and the fine work of Lyle Snyder, Sny-der, who scored two touchdowns touch-downs and passed to Jjloyd Fenn for the other, and a fast charging line that forced a couple of costly fumbles by Cyprus, Cy-prus, almose upset the applecart. Perhaps one of the state's best high school backs, a big kid by the name of Ken Strong, who is just about the whole Cyprus Cy-prus team, was responsible for Union's undoing as he scored two TD's and made two conversions, con-versions, and directed the Pirates Pi-rates on the field as he carried the ball as many as 12 consecu- STATISTICS Cyprus Union 19 First downs , 3 287 Yards rushing 41 0 Yards passing 68 287 Total yards 109 4 Passes attempted 6 ' 0 Passes completed 2 , 1 Passes intercepted 0 9 Fumbles 0 0 Opp. fumbles rec. 4 3 Penalties 2 35 Yards lost penalties , 20 tive times and each time piled up yardage in fact he was just about the only Pirate to do much against Union. Union stopped the Pirates on its own 40 yard line after the Cyprus eleven had taken the opening kickoff and -had driven downfield, only to face a 15-yard 15-yard penalty. Union took over, but was unable to penetrate the Pirate defense, and Snyder punted punt-ed to Cyprus' Bob Harkness, who bobbled the ball, and Union Un-ion recovered. On the first play, Snyder tore over the line for the first score. A drop kick by Arlys Iorge failed and Union led 6-0. Union's second score came when Snyder intercepted a pass and raced 55 yards for another TD. He then plunged over for the extra point, and Union was ahead 13-7, which is the way the half ended. Cyprus made its second score with Strong carrying the ball, and then plunged for the 14th point for the Pirates. But Union came right back as Snyder hit Lloyd Fenn with a fine pass, and the end for Union, who was in the clear, raced 65 yards to take the lead for the third time, 19-14, and only about 3 minutes left in the contest. However, Strong and company went to work in those 3 minutes and scored another TD, enough to send them into' the finals against Millard High, from Fillmore, next Saturday. It was a great moral victory for Union High, which went into the semi-final contest with a not too impressive record of having won 2 and tied 2 games in league play and lost three practice prac-tice Barnes.
