Show Union Students Rate Sligh In -Democracy Contest Three finalists from Union High, Lela Bartlett, Tom Rowley Row-ley and Jeanne Jensen went to Vernal Saturday, November 17, to participate in the Uintah District Dis-trict finals of the "I Speak for Democracy" contest, sponsored by the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce. . The annual radio script writing writ-ing and speaking competition saw ten contestants from Union in the preliminary contest held Thursday, November 15. at the school. Judges were local Attorney At-torney George Stewart; Sharon Cummings, agricultural instructor instruc-tor at Union High, and Jaycee representatives from Vernal. Ralph Preece, president of the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, introduced the contest, its purposes and achievements at that time. The local contest was rheld under the supervision of the school's speech department. With Mrs. Virgie Murphy, speech director, in charge. Word was received Monday that the Union High entries, Lela Bartlett and Tom Rowley, won second and third places, respectively, in the final judging judg-ing and will be awarded prizes priz-es as a result. |
