Show OPINIONS OF THE PRESS THE WENATCHEE (WASHINGTON) (WASHING-TON) JOURNAL (DEMOCRATIC) (DEMOCRAT-IC) The federal debt is approaching approach-ing the three hundred billion dollar mark and only a few short months ago economists were seriously questioning whether the economy would stand a debt of seventy five billions. bil-lions. If we can maintain a high-wage high-price economy from now on, and if we can bring the federal budget into balance next year or the year following, and keep it balanced, wc can service and support the debt But we cannot continue building a higher federal fed-eral debt and expect to survive. The American government cannot can-not spend itself and its citizens rich any more than an alcoholic can "drink himself sober." Those who advocate continued deficit financing of the federal government govern-ment either don't know the fundamentals fun-damentals of economics or they are intent upon destroying Amer-?:' Amer-?:' n ilrnorrnrv. 'I nib State, on the other hand, and every other state in the Union, Un-ion, has a full and overflowing treasury. Most of the towns and cities in this country are in good financial condition and the counties coun-ties are in much better shape than they have been in many years. It is high time for the states, the cities and counties to stop looking toward Washington, DC., with the expression of a dog about to receive a hunk of steak. Public works projects and other postwar spending plans had better be financed by state and local governments rather than bv fedcr (l u '-vts. V THE BEVERLY HILLS (CALIFORNIA (CALI-FORNIA ) BULLETIN (INDE-PENDANT) (INDE-PENDANT) Dismay has been widely expressed ex-pressed over the angry snarling between the British Lion and the Russian Bear that marred ine hoped-for peaceful tone of the UNO Security Council meeting in London. The atmosphere became be-came steely when Russia's Vish-insky Vish-insky charged that English troops are in Greece for imperialistic imper-ialistic purposes, and Britain's Bevin gave him "the lie." ( Yet, it may well be that this eposode of discord - this clearing of the air in the open - will prove a good thing for the UNO, and in the end for Soviet Russia as well and not at all a matter to be regretted. re-gretted. Britain, backed by the 'he United States, refused to Weld a single point on her policy n Greece. Russia stood alone. She did not gain an inch on this issue Communist Russia and the Western World probably will .icver see eye to eye on manybas-ic manybas-ic problems. But Russia will have to learn that her people and phil-osopy phil-osopy must live with other peoples and philosopies on this planet and not live in dominating dom-inating position over them. THE ALICE (TEXAS) NEWS (INDEPENDENT) I do not know how you feel about it, but when one remem- hers how American fighting men fought their way to the gates of hell, and asking no quarters of the enemy, anywhere or at any time, finally winning the greatest great-est victory over two of the greatest great-est nations in the history of the world; of how Industry and also Labor (not out on strike) did the apparently impossible, by converting con-verting overnight from peacetime peace-time manufacturing, to building of planes, ships, guns, tanks and a thousand scientific devices not yet disclosed to the public; of how farmers doubled production c: "ood and raiment; o. how ..iolhers, fathers, sweet-hiuiis sweet-hiuiis all performed jobs great a.id small with heads high and hearts bleeding for loved ones, 'some of whom came back and for others who sleep in unmarked unmark-ed graves, this limber-tailed appeasement ap-peasement of Russia cr any other country by the State Department, , the President, the Congress or others in authority, simply burns me down. And this goes for the gang who would give away your socks, just to "appease" Great Britain, Russia or any other country. The time is at hand for every tub to stand upon its own botton or go to staves. |
