Show Vets Heed Advice Of Horace Greeley Thousands of home-hunting veterans in 1948 followed Horace Hor-ace Greeley's classic advice: "Go West, young man!" They competed for 132 homesteads home-steads opened on two Reclamation Reclama-tion projects, the Tule Lake Division Di-vision of the Klamath project. California-Oregon, and the Gooding Good-ing Division of the Minidoka project, pro-ject, Idaho. Others sought to buy one of the 10 newly irrigated farms on the Pasco part of the vast Colum-bit Colum-bit Basin Reclamation project in the State of Washington, or to find an irrigated farm in California, Cal-ifornia, Arizona or another one of the 17 Reclamation-served states. Since the first post-war opening open-ing on public lands in August, 1946, 50,938 acres of irrigated land served by the Bureau of Reclamation have been opened to homestead with veterans of World War II given preference. 130,553 submitted applications have been received. Of that number, num-ber, 18,592 submitted applications applica-tions for the 587 availabla farm units. As an average of 31 applications applica-tions were submitted for each available farm, 30 persons were disappointed for each one who was fortunate in obtaining a farm. |
