Show Letter i To The Editor Whiterocks, Utah September 2, 1947 - Mr. C. L. Fretwell, Editor: "Roosevelt Standard" Roosevelt, Utah My Dear Mr. Fretwell: I shall be most grateful if this short letter of respectful protest can be published in the columns of your able paper. Last Friday evening I enjoyed the colorful outdoor "Indian Days Pageant at Roosevelt. As the stream of history flowed past my eyes, I was interested to note that only two religious groups were represented as contributing con-tributing to Ute history in the Basin; The Roman Catholic and the Latter-Day Saints. May I respectfully ask why the conspicuous omission of the the work of the Episcopal church on the Uintah and Ouray reservation? reser-vation? For many, many years this portion of the Anglican Communion has labored valiantly valiant-ly in the bringing of the Gospel to the great Ute peoples. Its history his-tory is starred with the names of devoted missionaries: Miss Canv field, beloved by all Utah, Deaconess Dea-coness Carter, Father Grant, Father Hersey, Father Howes, Father Talbot, with his almost quarter century of untiring service ser-vice to the Utah Nation. Many others. May I again, ask why, in, the interest of fair play and ecumenical ecumeni-cal charity, the whole record of the Episcopal Church was com- pletely. ignored? The pageant plainly stated, in word and dramatic action, that the two Roman Catholic missionaries mission-aries went on! And the presentation presen-tation of Brigham Young made it abundantly clear that his people peo-ple likewise continued their journeying! I The Episcopal Church, true, came later. BUT IT STAYED! And is still carrying on a full missionary program, by invitation invita-tion of the Ute Tribe. I trust that another year's pageant will not adopt "selective coloration," and that true history will be presented with full regard re-gard to the facts, un-prejudiced by subjective "wish fulfillment." Thanking you for courtesy, I am, gratefully, Your servant for Jesus' sake, Father Joseph F. Hogben Vicar of St. Elizabeth's Mission to the Utes Whiterocks, Utah |
