Show Legion Ceremony Commemorates First Victory Day Simple impressive ceremonies conducted by Basin Post 64 of the American Legion, heralded the first anniversary of victory ;n World War II in Roosevelt, Wednesday. Business houses closed their doors at 1 p. m. to witness the program which started at 1:30 with a parade, and culminated in a memorial observance at the City park. At the City park a call to order was issued by Otis Burton, the colors were advanced with Ken Trujillo in charge, and the gathering gath-ering joined In pledging allegiance alleg-iance to the flag, led by Jackie McLca, a member of the Boy Scout Troop 251. M, F. Benson, American Legion department chaplain, offered the Invocation. Speaking in behalf of the American Legion, Department Commander James Dalglelsh of Mylon, retraced the steps that led the United States Into World War II and cautioned that those same steps must not be taken again. E. J. Nixon welcomed the group in behalf of the city council coun-cil and told the assembled veterans vet-erans that the community welcomed wel-comed them home and stood ready to assist them in once more becoming established. The speaker of the day was George E, Stewart, Roosevelt attorney, at-torney, a veteran of World War II. Benediction which closed the short ceremony was offered .by Father Wendel, pastor of St. Helen's Catholic church. Music for the event was furnished fur-nished by the Roosevelt community com-munity band under the direction of Johnny Cook and Esther Wo-ges, Wo-ges, soprano, Bob Andrews was chairman of the memorial observance obser-vance and with Otis L. Burton arranged the parade and program. |
