Show Labor Leaders Aid In Administration Of European Plan The Economic Cooperation Administration, headed by Paul G. Hoffman, which is the active agency in connection with our European Recovery Program, has on its staff a number of important impor-tant leaders of American labor. It is usually taken for granted that in an undertaking of this type, the Government will receive re-ceive the benefit of the suggestions sugges-tions from industrial leaders manufacturers and financiers. It is not - readily understood that the Government needs the advice of responsible labor leaders. We understand that Mr. Hoff-man, Hoff-man, in his effort to fight Com-1 Com-1 - munist propaganda in Europe, is convinced that the presence of American labor leaders will strengthen the non-Communist labor groups in the participating countries. This is an important part of the recovery program because, as the reader well knows, Communist-controlled organizations or-ganizations in Europe are hostile to the economic effort. The largest organizations, rcp-resenting rcp-resenting American labor, the A. F. of L. and the C. I. O., do not see eye-to-cye on many questions, but they are cooperating cooper-ating to help the Western European Euro-pean nations build up their economic ec-onomic strength and thus resist Communist encroachments on the national independence. ' As one writer says, "American labor is no longer a divided house at least not beyond the water's edge." |
