Show Fire Sweeps Range At Elkhorn Station A fire, believed to have been caused by the careless dropping of a lighted cigaret, burned between be-tween 300 and 400 acres of range on the Ashley forest Tuesday and Wednesday. Scene of the blaze was about two miles west of the Elkhorn ranger station just inside the forest boundary. The fire did not reach the timbered stretches in the area. It confined itself to the sagebrush sage-brush and grass lands below the Lodgepole Dines. Ranger George Walkup directed di-rected fire fighting ODerations using about 700 men from the Forest and Indian services. Indian In-dian Service heavy road equipment equip-ment was brought into nlav against the 300 acre blaze Wednesday Wed-nesday afternoon and the fire was declared under control Wednesday Wed-nesday evening. The fire was reported Tuesday, Tues-day, and believed to have been extinguished bv the crew that first rushed into the area. But a wind ignited smouldering embers em-bers Wednesday morning, causing caus-ing it to break out anew. |
