Show Milkweed Floss Campaign to Begin Arrangements for the gathering gather-ing of milkweed floss throughout through-out the Uintah Basin during the month of September were completed com-pleted recently in a series of conferences con-ferences between Leslie N. Gooding, representative of the War Hemp Industries and the various Federal agencies throughout the Basin, said Mar-den Mar-den Broadbent, County Agent "Milkweed floss is a suitable substitute for "Kapok" in the manufacture of life preservers. A large supply of this year's crop is urgently needed," "Since the supply of kapok was largely cut off when the Japanese invaded invad-ed Java," said Mr. Gooding. Harry Woodward, county chairman, said all schools would be collection centers for Duchesne Du-chesne and Uintah counties. Mesh bags for the picking and sacking of the pods may be secured se-cured at the Soil Conservation offices in Duchesne, Roosevelt and Vernal and it is planned that they will be available at the schools. All filled bags are to be turned in at these same places for payment. Twenty cents a bag for properly cured pods will be promptly paid when turned in by the pickers. "All Federal and State agencies agenc-ies represented in the Uintah Basin are cooperating in this program and are hereby listed to assist in a quality product. 1. Get the bags at your nearest near-est school or Soil Conservation Service office. 2. Pick the whole pods. (They are now ripe, since the seeds have turned brown.) 3. Tie the tops of two bags together to-gether and hang them over a fence or pole, well above the ground, for curing, (two weeks are ordinarily sufficient). When cured shake these bags frequently frequent-ly to assist in proper curing. 4. Deliver your bags to the nearest collection center where you will receive a receipt for them. Payment will be made soon after delivery. "Immediate picking and proper prop-er curing is essential", said Mr. Broadbent. The floss is now ripe and pods will not become moldy and unusable if properly handled. "Milkweed floss is famous for its buoyancy now it is ripened and you will be "Saving Someone's Some-one's Life" by your efforts to harvest this, "War essential crop", said the county agent. |
