Backing up Olsen's starters will ' be junior Burke Smith, younger . brother of former Bountiful all-' all-' stater Sid Smith, in the outfield, along with juniors Tim Wooley at ': short and Mark Weston at second. Bountiful began the year with vic- - tories over Orem and American . Fork, prior to this week's Granite '. District Tournament. Warden will back both of them up. The outfield out-field finds Bourgeois in left, Jeremy Chiles in center and Bearnson Bearn-son in right. Sophomores Scott Richards and Mounteer will also see action for Davis. VIEWMONT (Coach Wade Bender): Optimism is high at the Viewmont campus, and why not. ' Bender is high on his players, including infielders Tyler Rainey, senior, at first; senior Paul James at second, and senior Derek Hope at short. Juniors Matt Clark and Keith Gordon will back up Hope and Secrist on the left side. The outfield looks like this: Hank Howell, senior, in left; senior David Waldvogel or junior Gary Latham in center, and Paul Garlick or Tony Steglich in right. Catching chores will be handled by senior Reid Goodwin, with junior Tony Christensen his backup. Pitching for Viewmont will be righties Hope, Steglich, Garlick, Clark and Clay Christensen, the latter two juniors, with junior Darren Dar-ren Baker the lefty. Viewmont began be-gan the year with four straight wins, and should be tough for foes all season. WOODS CROSS (Coach Steve Lindsay): The Wildcats will start four seniors and five juniors this year, as Woods Cross fights for a state berth. Gone are many veterans veter-ans of last year's playoff team, but Lindsay still returns plenty of talent. ta-lent. Junior Chad Watson will start in left, senior Max Turner in center and junior Chad Rawlins in right. Senior Shane Frederickson will also return to action in the outfield when he recovers from an injury. Shawn Cullimore, a junior, will be at second, senior Shaun Cosper at short and senior Bret Rogers at third, moved from shortstop where he played last year. Catching will be junior Greg Dyson, and Shaun Stephenson will probably handle the DH or utility roles. Woods Cross will throw Worth-en, Worth-en, junior Brad Kossin and junior Brian Jensen to start with. The Wildcats should have little trouble with their offense this season, and if the pitching jells, they should be a factor in the race this year. Woods Cross is currently 2-1 on the year. Region play begins April 12 with Highland at Davis, Bountiful at East and Viewmont at Woods Cross. The state tournament begins be-gins May 23, and runs through May 27. |
