Show Soccer wrapups Viking goalie scores as Viewmont wins; Cats, Braves, Darts victorious By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor VIEWMONT There's no guarantee how long it will last, but Viewmont High goalkeeper Travis Godfrey could honestly make a statement seldom uttered by the man in front of the net: "I've scored more goals than I've given up." Godfrey scored on a penalty kick to cap off a 10-0 Viewmont rout of Granger Friday afternoon. The Vikings, now 3-0-1 on the year, have yet to relinquish a goal, while scoring 14 themselves. The only blemish came in a scoreless tie with Hillcrest in a game called in the second half due to snow. Friday's rout started earfy, as Casey Layton scored off an assist from Jeff Smith in the second minute mi-nute of the game. David Lauder tallied on a penalty kick in the 1 1th minute, and then David Chidester scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-0 23 minutes into the first half. Layton got another goal on an assist from Jeff Beckman a minute later. About a minute after that, Viewmont took a 5-0 lead when Beckman scored off a throw-in from Greg Albrechtsen. A penalty kick by Kelly Bland after a great fake by Lauder, and a Lauder score off another Albrechtsen assist made it 7-0 at the half. Lauder added another goal five minutes into the second half, a booming shot from just inside the box. Layton took a pass from Chidester and tallied at the 1 1 minute mi-nute mark, and then Godfrey scored on the penalty halfway through the final 40 minutes. Earlier in the week, Viewmont shut down Bonneville 2-0 in Ogden, as Lauder scored on a free kick and Cook banged one in off a corner kick. The Vikes were to host Weber Tuesday afternoon. Woods Cross improvedvto 3-1 with two impressive wins last week, a 2-0 victory at Skyline on Tuesday, and Friday night's 3-2 overtime victory at home against powerful Taylorsville. At Skyline, the Wildcats played stingy defense, while Tommy Angelos and Dave Simon were scoring goals. That brought about Friday's tussle with the Warriors, one of the top teams in the state. Taylorsville scored first, as Jimmy Jim-my Davis shot one past goalkeeper Ryan Arbon in the third minute of the game. Justin Shaw tied things in the 14th minute on a great play from the right side of the Taylorsville Taylors-ville goal. But just before half, Davis scored again for Taylorsville when his shot hit the goalpost and bounced into the net. The Wildcats toughened defensively defen-sively in the second half, with Arbon making several fine saves. Angelos was tripped midway through the period while in the box, and his penalty kick tied things at 2-all. In the second five-minute overtime over-time period, he was tripped again, this time just inside the box. His second penalty kick of the night proved the game winner. Woods Cross was slated to play at Clearfield Tuesday night. Bountiful split its games last week, dropping a 2-0 contest to Taylorsville on Tuesday and then shutting down Cottonwood on the road 4-0 on Friday. The 3-1 Braves got a pair of goals from Gary Olson, and one each from Jeff Hassett and Mike Peffer. Bountiful will host Layton this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Millcreek Junior High. Davis opened its soccer season with a split, dropping a 3-1 decision at Ben Lomond, then capturing a 3-2 win at home over Weber. Joel Garr scored the lone goal against the Scots, while Friday's win over Weber came on two goals from Blake Wilcox and a score from Rob Jacobson. , ..,.The .Darts,-were to-travel to , Layton yesterday. Due to Easter vacation, there will be limited high school sports action this week, each team playing just once. |
