Show City debates value of entrance and exit signs By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL Should Bountiful Boun-tiful allow signs to be placed at the entrances to the city? If so, what should they say? There were differences of opinion opin-ion when the Bountiful City Council Coun-cil met last Wednesday night. After a long debate, the issue was tabled until tonight (Wednesday) for further study and possible site selection. The matter came to light last week when Timothy Tate, president presi-dent of the Bountiful Lions Club, asked the council's permission for the Lions Club to donate two signs for permanent display at the north and south entrances of the city. "The Lions Club would like to have a sign displayed on the northeast north-east corner of the City Park, 200 West and 400 North, and on Main Street just north of Silm Olson's," Mr. Tate told the council, adding that wherever they are located, the signs will comply with the city ordinance. ordi-nance. Even this brought some differences differ-ences of opinion. "I don't like signs any place, but especially in our city park," said Mayor Dean S. Stahle. "They are distracting to motorists and in most cases a nuisanceMo motorists. "If a sign is erected, it should merely identify the city and not be used for advertising as is usually the case," he said. Mr. Tate said he would like to have the sign available for promoting promot-ing special events or occasions, by rotating messages once or twice a week. "These would be community marquees for use by the city with only a small portion of the sign available to say that it (sign) was donated by the Bountiful Lions Club," said Mr. Tate. He told the council that the club would like input from the city as to the actual size, height, width, clearance from the ground, and composition of the signs. Mayor Stahle said he appreciates appreci-ates all that the Lions Club does for the city but would ask them to continue con-tinue with similar projects as have been done in the past. Councilwoman Barbara Holt said that the people she has talked . to about signs of this kind have had nothing but praise for the Lions Club for wanting to take on this type of project. "They would like these signs which would be another outlet for what is happening in our city," she said. |
