| Show ASHMAN S SCHOOL ECONOMY school superintendent advises teachers in anual institute the regular attendance and punctuality of pupils in sevier district during the present school year was strongly stion gly emphasized by supt bupt A J ashman in his talk before the principals meeting held as the opening session of institute last saturday morning inasmuch as the appropriation of state school funds is based on the daily average attendance record of a district mr ashman stated that there is a chance for this district to gain an extra or by maintain maintaining inEr a high attendance average in in all the schools he cited an instance last year where one of the schools in this county had an average of 20 pupils absent each day during the year which lost the district per pupil per day and resulted in the loss to the district of approximately for the year this school had an enrollment roll ment of only pupils and the absence record was entirely too high mr ashman thought principals were urged not to dismiss school for cleanup clean up day or any similar occasion unless it is absolutely necessary mr ashman admitted that the term may be short again this year and rec commended that the best use be made of the time now with just as few holidays absences and tardiness as possible parents were requested not to take their pupils out of school for shopping purposes or other unnecessary reasons the importance of rigid economy was impressed upon the principals Is they bere advised to con sage berve fuel light and supplies of every kind owing to stringent times health was another matter which mr ashman stressed as important to successful school operation principals were asked to submit to miss bliss laura G willis school nurse a list of the names of absent pupils so that when she visits the schools she may investigate the cause of absence by going to the homes mr ashman urged that parent teacher associations be organized and maintained in each district and that the meetings be devoted to the discussion of vital vi tal problems concerning the schools and not resolve themselves into mere socials and refreshment par he also expressed great satisfaction with the fact that arrangements range ments have been made to include in the school course musical instruction work under the capable direction of mr and mrs J T G hilgendorff local teachers of violin viola cello and piano who have great experience in both private and public school instruction st in music at the same time the principals meeting was in session problems relative to work in the primary grades were ere discussed before primary teachers under supervision of mrs elise stillman primary supervisor of the district the regular district institute for all teachers was held in the high school auditorium at richfield at 1130 a in saturday after some musical numbers and prayer supt bupt ashman called upon miss bliss anne larsen of koosharem Koo sharem to give an account of her attendance at th world federation of education meeting held in denver last summer miss larsen told interestingly of the many races and nations represented at this meeting and said the dominant note was world peace mr ashman recommended that the sevier district teachers organize three study groups one in richfield Eich field one in salina and one in monroe to stimulate more extensive reading of worthwhile books and magazines of the local teaching profession profess on one book he particularly suggested as worthwhile to teachers especially was Over streets how to influence human behavior which book is now being studied by the richfield relief society after this tall talk the meeting aps was turned over to the sevier district D Is teachers association with president leon newton of monroe in charge mr newton announced that he had bad received the regular annual letter of greet greeting ing from the president of the utah education association and inasmuch as that individual was mr ashman who was there in person he called upon him to deliver the message personally supt bupt ashman praised the work of the local teachers organization during the past year and urged them to keep a strong organization which made possible the work of the state body he thanked the local teachers for their influence in placing him in the position as head of the utah teachers organization and said this honor had given him valuable experience and enabled him to have one of the most pleasant and profitable profi bitable years of his life the fell following 0 wing officers of the sevier district teachers association were elected golden wright president D bf thompson vice vice president miss sophia goldbranson reelected elected re secretary treasurer A ba M Bl maughan aughan richfield rulon elsinore vilda jessen koosharem Koo sharem leon newton monroe and louis sorensen salina executive committee |
