the mill numerous scenic spots many of them not too well known locally because caup it is so timely now at the beginning of the tourist season excerpts from the article are published below outlining in brief what fishlake fishlike Fish lake forest offers to the pleasure seeker the fishlake fishlike Fish lake national forest embraces practically all the southern part of what is known as the coal range east of the sevier river the canyon range between round valley and the sevier desert the Pa livant range between sevier vally on the east cast and millard valley on the west and the gold mountain tushar range between piute valley on the east and beaver valley on the west it has long been noted for its features and in the p past ast probably more tourists have visited i cited this forest each year than any other forest in central southern utah its chief place of interest is fish lake from which the forest derives its name this lake is approximately six miles long and one mile in width and has a depth of more than feet in places it is fed by several clear mountain streams the most important of which ate are twin creeks doctor creek and jorgen sen creek there is also ferron creek which empties into the johnson valley reservoir fish lake has for in many any years been one of the chief pleasure resorts resort of utah it is so named because of the large number of native trout found therein during the early settlement of this section of the state in the early days these trout furnished an important item of diet for the indians 1 a ns and settlers the state fish and game department has now stocked the lake with six different varieties among which are eastern brook rainbow steel steelhead liend and the last two varieties are becoming very cry large and each year a number are caught weighing from ten to twenty pounds each season thousands of trout fin gerlings and larger trout are planted in the lake from the state fish hatch ery cry at glenwood and from the government hatchery hatz hery at spring ville in the spring of the year the rainbow trout and in the fall of the year the eastern brook trout go up the streams for spawning and provide a very pic esque sight on account of their great number the bed of the lake is approximately feet above sea level there are many beautiful camping in g grounds on the northwest side of the lake while the southeast side is almost entirely inaccessible ces sible due to the steep slope and lava deposits which extend from the lake shore to the top of the mountain there are two resorts at the lake both of which are provided with hotels and cabins one resort has just completed a lodge costing approximately many tourists make these places their headquarters while visiting at the lake other tourists tourist take their own camp outfits with them and camp along the lake shore to the north of fish lake is seven mile creek a most beautiful t stream which meanders its way down through sonic some of t the e most picturesque mountain valleys of the state this valley is also known as seven mile valley just east of seven mile valley is mt marvin elevation feet from which on a clear day one can see into seven counties of utah the salina experiment station located on gooseberry creek seventeen miles east of salina is is a place of special interest to stock men scientific investigations an and d experiments are conducted at this station from year to year with poisonous plants found on the national forest ranges range q putter puffer lake at an elevation of feet is located twenty miles east of deaver beaver and near the head waters of beaver river this lake is stocked with trout the area around puffer lake as well as practically all the higher country of the beaver watershed supports a good stand of spruce timber this entire region has many beautiful camping places and has a cool climate even during the summer months campers quite frequently make horseback ho rides to mt holly delano 1 ano and belknap peak from which points of view of most of central and southern part of the state can be secured delano has an elevation of feet and mt 10 belknap an eleva 1 tion of feet and are among the high peaks of the state the beaver mountains are noted for their large herds of mule deer the number was estimated to be head in 1930 almost any time of the day but especially of a morning and evening deer can be seen at different places along the main highway extending from beaver to puffer lake large numbers are found farther away from the highway deer are also plentiful on the other parts of the forest maple grove located at the base of the pioneer mountains twenty miles west of salina pio vides an excellent place for parties making one day outings and for conventions of church appl an ec ivi organizations mn athe fhe water used 91 irrigation purposes in lound oun valley springs up under the ledges and runs through a meadow aw fringed with maple and cottonwood trees the camp ground consisting of approximately fifty acres at this place is fenced and is used exclusively for recreational purposes near the mouth of corn creek canyon six miles east of kanosh is adelaide park a grove of box elder trees enclosed and re seeded to blue grass this area is used largely by people of kanosh meadow and surrounding ranches oak creek canyon four miles east of oak city is found oak creek canyon a favorite recreation area for the people of oak city leamington leavington Lea lynndyl lynndal Lynn dyl delta hinckley and oasis refreshments are served at the oak creek desort and dances are conducted approximately once each week during the summer season there aie a number of beautiful camp grounds in the canyon and this area is of particular value because of its accessibility to the towns located in the east cast and north part of millard county A visit to oak creek canyon would be incomplete without visiting the oak creek spring which has its source under a ledge and comprises 90 per cent of the water in oak creek during the summer period in 1914 the forest service planted small western yellow pine trees tree on an area approximately two and one half miles east of the resort and just below the radford ranger station these trees were approximately six six inches in height when planted and now average from two to sixteen feet in height and there is a survival of better than 70 per cent this is one of the most successful tree plantations in the intermountain region on account of the canyon being highly suitable for the growing of western yellow pine trees between 1500 and 2500 2500 trees of this species is planted in this canyon each year other recreational areas chalk creek canyon just east of fillmore meadow creek canyon east of meadow and maple hollow east of holdon are increasing in importance each year for recreational purposes and are used target largely by the people of these comma communities cities but recent improvements prove ments especially in chalk creek canyon are making this place attractive to tourists travel ling over U S highway 91 between salt lake and california |
