Show Extension Service Praises Trench Type of Silo If properly constructed and tilled, the trench type silo can he used for corn silage as effectively effect-ively as the upriggt type, according accord-ing to Glen Baird, Utah State Agricultural Ag-ricultural College extension agronomist. ag-ronomist. Usually unsatisfactory results some hen the trench silo is poorly made and improperly filled. The following points should be considered con-sidered in the use of the trench silo: (1) Locate where seepage and runoff water won't enter silo. (2) Sidewalls should be slopped slop-ped one foot inward for each four feet of depth. If this is made easier because the tractor truck or other implement used for packing can get closer to the edge. There is also less chance for the walls to cave in. (3) Permanent wall lining with concreate is desirable if the silo is to be used ov.-r a period of years. (4) Proper packing cannot he over-emphasised. In upright silos the great depth gives use to considerable pressure which effectively packs the contents. In the trench silo packing must be done with heavy equinmn .such as tractors. (5) Air can be more readily 'excluded from finely cut corn then from coare'ly cut. tG) Center of silo should he rounded up throe to four feet high and then sealed with wet. straw, green hay, or roofing pap?r. |
