Show Vacancies At Annapolis Says Watkins Senator Arthur V. Watkins (R-Utah) will have four vacancies vac-ancies to fill at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., for the 1950 school year and applicants will be designated on the basis of Cival Service Examinations Ex-aminations to be conducted Nov- J t srator Watkins announced Thursday that persons des ring an appointment to the acaremy should make application to mm at "US Senator Office Buna mg. Wastagton, D. C. No applications applica-tions will be received after Oct ober 26th. In making application for the Civil Service examination, appn cants should state their names in full, naxnes of parents age ol applicant, schooling and resid ence-city, county, and state. The Civil Service examinations the Senator pointed out wil 1 not qualify the candidates foi Annapolis. Those appointed r the Senator still must pass re crnlnr academy tests. "This method of designating candidates," Senator Watkins .Said, "was undertaken by me to insure the selection of the best qualified candidates and to eliminate political appointments which in many instances are no' in the best interest of our mill tary establishment." In addition to the mental qual ifications required of academy appointees, each must be a bonn fide resident of the state of Utah and a citizen of the United States Federal law prohibits appointment appoint-ment of any but legal residents of the state represented by the Senator. Further, Applicants should ascertaain beforehand by undergoing a strict physioa examination, that they are qual ified to meet the physical re quirements at the Naval Acad mv. In addition, candidates for the academy "must be not less than seventeen years of age nor more than twenty-one years of ag on April 1st of the calendar year in which they enter the academy," according to military regulations. Only exception to this agr rule applies to candidates who have served honorably not less than one year in the armed forces Such candidates may be admitted ad-mitted between the ages of seventeen and twenty-threr years of age. On the basis of the above mentioned Civil Service examinations, exa-minations, Senator Watkins will appoint a principal and three alternates for each of the four vacacies to the academy. Should the principle fail to qualifv the appointment will fall to the first alternate, then the second and finally the third alternate if the first three fail to qualify in order. All applicants will subsequently subse-quently be notified of the place where examinations will he held. |
