Bn'r Counts 80th Birthday on Monday "Captain" Thomas Braby, former for-mer mayor of this city, observed his eightieth birthday anniversary anniver-sary Monday at his home at First West and Third South streets. Mr. Braby was born in Sussex, I England, January 10, 1864, a son I of Edward and Ann Braby. The I family consisting of the parents ; and 10 children, came to Utahvn 1875, after joining the L D S church in England. ! In September, 1879, Mr. Braby ' came to Mt. Pleasant, and was employed by L. J. Jordan and John H. Seely, prominent wool growers, for 11 years, after which he engaged in business for himself. him-self. He married Eliza Kedding-ton Kedding-ton of Salt Lake City September 21, 1886, and they were the parents par-ents of seven children. Mrs.Braby died February 22, 1927, and on June 18, 1931, Mr. Braby married Annie C. Jensen of Mt. Pleasant. During his youth when Mr. Braby worked as a sheepherder, I he acquired his education with j 'Caskell's Compendium of Forms,' , practically his so:e teacher. In 1894, Caleb West, Utah's last territorial, governor, commissioned commission-ed Mr. Braby captain of company C (later company D) Utah national na-tional guard, which rank he held for 14 years. During our trouble with Mexico, preceding the World war, Mr. Braby was made a major of ordinance, and was stationed at Fort Douglas on the staff of General W. G. Wiliams. He was a merr.bc-r of ihs Utah state shoot ing team which competed at Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1910-11. ! i He was assistant postmaster three terms, prior ' to serving 16 years as postmaster from 1999 to 1915, and later served two terms as mayor. Previously he had been on the city council committee of three which supervised construction construc-tion of the municipal water system. sys-tem. He also served four years as city marshal. I He has been active in the L D S church, as president and later as secretary of the North ward elders I quorum, and is now a member of and is group leader of the High ; I Priests quorum and lives in the ; ' South ward. He also has been active in fraternal organizations, j He has served many years as secretary-treasurer of the Pleas- ant Creek Irrigation company. His children are: Mrs. Annie B. Syndergaard and Mrs. Ada B Kofoed of Salt Lake City; Edward Braby, of Columbia; Orson Brab of California, and Mrs. Nellie B. ' ' Coates, of Mt. Pleasant. He has ' five grandchildren and six great-' great-' ' grandchildren. One son, Ralph : R. Braby, was one of 11 members : 1 of the 145th field artillery who I were drowned at an Piego, Cali-' Cali-' I fornia in May, 1918, when a rip : tide engulfed them while bath- ing. His other two sons are both I I veterans of World war I. |
