Show , Conservative The British are a conservative ! people, we a.e constantly reminded, remind-ed, and the government is ofien I neld up as an ideal rule of the well-to-do and moderate classes. However, the British have no 1 written constitution and the gov- ; .nmcnt ollen does things that Americans abhor. Seme weeks ago .he coal mines were nationalized .nd eveiybody knows that the radio cadoasting monopoly belongs to :he government. It seems, however, that the British Brit-ish government occasionally goes into business on its own account. What is decidedly worse, from the standpoint of private capitalism, he government takes the profits when it can get some. An example is the investment of about $25,000,-000 $25,000,-000 in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, Comp-any, which in twenty-six years has paid the British government more than $75,000,000 in profits or dividends divi-dends without the government incurring in-curring any expenses in looking after its investment. In this country, which we think is so much better managed, the government would have probably bailed out the oil company and left the profits to be distributed among the private stockholders. |
