Show Lehi Tips Vikings in Rough 46 To 41 Contest Last Friday Night It was Lehi 46 and Pleasant Grove 41 at the end of a 32 minute "miscellaneous contest" last Friday Fri-day night. Better Basket ball has doubtedless been played in venerable P.G.H.S. Gym, but this scribe has seldom seen rougher. The game started out like most games calmly enough but the atmosphere soon changed. The boys in the striped shirts seemed inclined to rather let things work themselves out and it was the whistle-tooters who got the work out before the final horn ended the affair. The broadcast before the game began, urging the fans to refrain from "booing" was a fine gesture, and would have saved the day had the officials kept; the game under control. A few bad calls on out of bounds play, however, and the fans were on the officials necks. No one present seemed to think that either team benefitted from the bad calls. About as many mistakes mis-takes were made on one side as the other, but the numerous errors took considerable of the joy out of things. The crowd was a sellout. Every seat was occupied by a partisan fan and there were plenty of latecomers late-comers standing up. School loyalty was high, but the kids confined most of their explosive vocal outbursts out-bursts to organized cheering. The halftime Pep Club activities seem to have taken a change and it's all to the good. The yells the girls used to give have been supplemented sup-plemented with preciison drills, and that's an improvement there's enough shouting at a basketball game anyway. As to the game itself, the scoring scor-ing went about as follows. Best point-getter for the evening was Haws of Lehi with a total of 12. Wathen got 11; Margoan 9; Coll-edge Coll-edge 8 and Thraster 6, for a total of 46 for the visitors. Lehi Coach Hillman used only the five starters start-ers but their consistent scoring was enough to turn the trick. For Pleasant Grove, Jae Johnson John-son shared top honors with Frank Driggs, each scoring 10. Bill Trimble Trim-ble tanked 8; Wadley got 6; Winters Win-ters 4; Buckner 3; and Lewis 0. P. G. toal 41. Seventeen fouls were called against the Vikings and 15 against Lehi, and this alone is evidence that the officials were rather on the slow side. P.G. got 11 out of their 15 for 71 percent and Lehi got 10 out of 17 for 60 percent. The Lehi win elevated the Pioneers Pion-eers to first place in the Alpine Division and relegated the other teams as follows: B.Y. High and Juab tied for second; Pleasant Grove and American Fork tied for third and Tintic last with no wins whatsoever. The Vikings are at home again, come next Friday night. B.Y. High Wildcats will furnish the opposition. opposi-tion. Here's hoping that the folks who attend will see a game in which the officals will display enough fortitude and consistency to keep things under control throughout the game. |
