Show OREM WIMS OVER VIKINGS LAST WEEK Music may have charms to "sooth the savage beast" but the personaJ appearance of the tuneful tune-ful King Sisters had little effect on the Orem Tigers last Friday afternoon af-ternoon bofore a large and enthusiastic enthus-iastic homecoming crowd. The weather was ideal for football foot-ball and the King Sisters added color and a cosmopolitan touch to the aotivities. But for the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove supporters the bitter overbalanced the sweet. The vic-toiy vic-toiy hungry Vikings lost the game 18 to 0. And that, to a group of fans who have come to regard continuous football victories as commonplace was a near-calamity. The victory was welcome to Coach Udell Westover, himself a former Viking star. He and his Golden Cats have been taking it on the chin from the blue-clad Vikings for some time back. Oh well, "you can't win 'em all," as the man said. And you can't manage to win a large percentage year after year, especially in high school competition where you have to take what the Good Lord sends in the way of athletic material. No one knows why, but outstanding outstand-ing athletes come in crops and that alone adds to the spice of football coaching. Coach Jim Ditty and his able assistants are doing a commendable commend-able job; but you can't lose such stalwarts as Paul Allen, Lou Dev-eraux, Dev-eraux, Kay Giles, Gene Ash, Binny Hullinger, Paul Gillman and others, .without it hurting you bad. There's one thing for sure the young Vikes may be green and inexperienced, in-experienced, but they are learning fast and may do right well in the league competition which starts next Friday. Orem scored early in the first quarter on a steady 73-yard march, with David Thompson going over tackle for the six pointer. The PG defense stiffened and that was all for the Tigers in the first half. In the third canto, Orem staged another drive which culminated when fullback Lee Bunnell plunged over from one yard out. Late" In the game Thompson scored again on a two-yard thrust through the line. Irvin Sackett played stellar ball on the Tiger line and Dean Richards, Rich-ards, Dave Peterson and Evan Mattinson were Viking standouts. League play begins Friday, Sept. 26, with Pleasant Grove traveling to Vernal for a game with the Uintah Utes. I ' |
