Show Little Leaguers Win Over Salt Lake, Lose to Provo Club I It was "cops and robbers" on the I local high school campus Monday night as rieasant Groves Berry Boys pilfered a 13 to 2 ball game , from the sons of Salt Lake's police-' police-' men and Firemen. The P. G. Little Leaguers stole everything" so often including second base, that the young coppers and firemen were considering nailing down home 1 plate before the game was finally over. Hometown supporters and there were plenty of them, affirmed that the Berry Boys hit 'em to the outfield, out-field, the short field, and laid down bunts, that had the visitors literally liter-ally gasping. In fact the Newman-Lewis disciples built such a fire under the Salt Lake lads that some of the firemen couldn't put it out. Glen Warnick fire-balled the locals to a victory, by going the full route. Richard Wadley did the catching. In Wednesday evening's game, with Provo's youthful all-stars, it was something else again. The game was not more than five minutes min-utes old before the Berry Boys awoke to the fact that something new had been added. Appearances seemed to indicate that this was about the first time the locals had been up against consistent long-ball hitting and fastball pitching. The lads from out Provo way fell on the offerings offer-ings of pitcher Lynn Newman and in the first frame boosted several over the heads of the outfielders. Before they were finally retired the ajl-stars had pushed 5 runs across the plate. The locals went to work, however, how-ever, and from here on they made a ball game of it. The several hundred hun-dred Pleasant Grove and Provo fans on hand for the contest were treated to one of the finest games of boys' baseball seen in these parts for a long time. "Lefty" Lewis, who took over the mound duties after the disas-terous disas-terous first part of the game, did a masterful job, striking out numerous numer-ous Provo batsmen. On the whole it was a busy evening even-ing for the Berry Boys, but they learned a lot from the fast-charging cleat-shod lads from Provo. The game ened with a score of 7 to 3 for the visitors. Chris Christensen's final speecfi of appreciation was a fitting climax cli-max to Pleasant Grove's first season sea-son of Little Leaguer baseball. |
