Show Body Measurements In Milk Producers Cows With Long Head Are Most Productive Any dairy cow that producei only 5,000 pounds of milk a year barely pays her way and seldom makes more than a very small profit for her owner. Supporting this theory is a recent report of tha Department of Agriculture, from studies made by the former Bureau of Dairy Industry, now a part of the Agricultural Research Re-search Service. Involved in the analysis were the records from approximately 950,000 cows and the report concluded con-cluded that in most areas a cow ppH ;j 5,000 i - ., Dairy experts place 5,000 pounds per year as minimum for cow to produce If she is to pay her own jWay or earn even a small profit for her owner. should produce substantially more than 5,000 pounds of milk to pay her owner a profit. Of special interest In the report re-port were observations on body measurements as related to milk-producing milk-producing ability. The Beltsville Research Center and 20 cooperating coop-erating state experiment stations, in an analysis involving data from 350 Holstein and 346 Jersey cows, found that the length of the head was the one body measurement most consistently and significantly indicative of milk production, that is, a longer head generally indi-icates indi-icates higher milk production. I One of the significant research ; contributions reported by the Bureau Bu-reau is the development of a new short-time method for making American Cheddar cheese from pasteurized milk. This new meth-, od, now available to industry, requires re-quires only two and one-half hours from the time the rennet Is added to tha milk until the curd is pressed. This is 3 to 4 hours less than present methods require, and much hand labor is eliminated. elim-inated. |
