Show Groups Slate Campaign To Remove Fire Hazards During The Coming Week The Pleasant Grove Firemen's association, the local Beautification committee and the Boy Scouts, working in cooperation with schools and churches, will observe National Fire Prevention Week October 7-14, attempting to emphasize the value and necessity of efforts toward eliminating eli-minating fire hazards. A lecture has been arranged by Chief J. Kemp to be given at high i school on Tuesday. Short talks are being scheduled by members of the Beautification campaign to be given in each ward of Timpanogos stake, Sunday morning morn-ing and Tuesday evening, to arouse citizens to the necessity of cleaning up their streets and premises, getting get-ting rid of old dry weeds and rubbish. rub-bish. According to Fire Chief Kemp many of this year's fires in the community com-munity have been grass and weed fires. Gathering, piling and burning of weeds and refuse now, under supervision might be the means of saving a serious fire later, as well as helping to make the city cleaner and more beautiful. On Tuesday evening a local fireman fire-man will meet with the Scout and Explorer troops of each ward to acquaint ac-quaint them with their part in the fire safety campaign. Grant Rob-bins Rob-bins will speak in the Second ward, Vern Cullimore First, Josiah Kemp Third, Harold Walker Manila. William C. Smith, chairman of Scout committee on Safety has this campaign in charge. Many people are not aware of the common causes of fires. Housewives House-wives would feel very nervous if they had a stick of dynamite in their kitchen closet, yet they often stow away a gallon of naptha gasoline, which has as much explosive power as two-thirds of a stick of dynamite. They still try to clean clothing with this dangerous solvent, risking severe burns by the rubbing together of gasoline saturated fabrics, causing caus-ing static electricity. Homeowners should plan next week to have their electric wiring inspected. Many fires are caused by faulty wiring and by attaching too many electric appliances on a. wiring wir-ing system, too light to carry the load. Attics should be cleaned of old papers and rubbish. Loose shingles on roofs should be replaced with new ones, and flues should be made safe. Fire Prevention Week is the time assigned for these safety measures. |
