Show City Garden to Supply Vegetables The canning of vegetables from the FERA community garden of 13 acres of this city, is in full j blast and the supply of canned vegetables veg-etables to date has already reached the mark of 7,463 cans and is increasing in-creasing rapidly. Tire gar-den, said to be the best in Utah county, was visited Wednesday Wednes-day by Lester Mangum, relief director, direc-tor, who praised it highly and commended com-mended those in charge. Frank Hunter, the garden supervisor, has taken a keen interest in the project and is manifesting a truly cooper-active cooper-active spirit performing labor not really required of him. More lias been utilized from this garden than any other community garden of the! county. Four to six men a day are regularly employed and on days when extra labor has to be performed per-formed such as pea picking more are employed. Men who are especially espe-cially interested in garden work are kept on this project. The women who shell the peas labor gratis with the exception of those who are working out relief allotments and the supervisors. As high as 68 women in one day have worked at shelling and preparing the peas for canning. Mrs. Nell Kan-en is supervisor of canning the vegetables and is performing a splendid work. Tire Co-op building has been rented by the city and the women gather there for the pea shelling. To date 4,100 pounds of beets have been canned, part of this amount as greens and part as table beets. Also 6,770 pounds of beet greens havej been given to other towns; 1,350 pounds have been given out in American Fork on commodity distribution dis-tribution days; 1,365 pounds of chard, and 5,770 pounds of peas Cbefore shelling) have been canned. Corn and Tomatoes are soon ready for canning and will be taken carej of as they ripen. Another women's project which will be underway within a. few days, states Mrs. Ora Chipman. FERA head of north Utah county, is the women's sewing. Machines will be i placed in the Co-op building and an excer-nt supervisor provided. Tire women will have the opportunity opportun-ity of going there to not only sew, but to receive free advice on sow ing problems. Not only will atlen tion be directed to the sewing of new materials, but making over clothing also will be considered. School sewing will be underwav within a short time.
