Show Weed Campaign Now On On Monday of this week, State Commissioner Com-missioner of Agriculture, Harden Bennion; County Agents, W. J. Thayne and A. B. Call; and County Pest Control Directors, II. V. Swen-son Swen-son and Grover Clyde, together with fifteen of American Fork's representative represen-tative farmers, made a tour of this district, visiting many of the localities infested with either White Top, Black Morning Glory, or Canadian Thistle. The object of this tour was to prepare pre-pare for a more definite and intelligent intelli-gent campaign against these weeds. Commissioner Bennion explained to the farmers that the plan proposed by the State Department is to designate desig-nate in each county of the state one, or more, localities in which to center our efforts during 1929, for special demonstration work against noxious weeds. It is proposed now to use a spray (Calcium Chlorate) which has been proven to be very effective. In the afternoon, a meeting was held with the County Commissioners of Utah county, and the proposed plan was presented to, and approved by them, both as to the designating certain cer-tain areas to be worked on this year, and as to the division of the expense, one-third to be paid by the state, one-thir'd one-thir'd by the county, and one-third by the land owner. American Fork, and possibly north, was designated In the north-end of Utah county, and Mapleton In the south end, to be worked on this year. The work in our district will be carried car-ried on un'der the direction of Commissioner Com-missioner J. W. Gillman and Director H. V. Swenson, in co-operation with our local weed committee: John F. Millar, Chairman, W. Jj. Chadwlck, Eugene S. Briggs and Wm. H. Sager. Much good work has been done In American Fork district during the last two years against these noxious weeus under the direction of our local lo-cal weed committee, and much credit is due them for their untiring efforts. We extend now an urgent invitation to every farmer in this district who has any of the above named weeds on his premises to get in touch with the local weed committee, nameu above, and take advantage of the splendid opportunity now presented to us to CLEAN UP. The invitation applies also to owners of City property. This weed question is certainly one In which "A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE," and possibly many times nine. Let's all pull together now, and by the expenditure of a little time and money save ourselves untold trouble and expense In the future. We CAN control the situation now, so by all means let ug do so. |
