Show County Democrats schedule convention Utah County Democrats will convene their organizing convention Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Orem City Center, according to county chair Bob Stringham. The major business will be the election of county officers. Area coordinators and legislative chairs will also be chosen. , Democrats interested in running for party office are encouraged to contact Mike Marchant, 374-9511, who has been appointed to chair the convention. The names of declared candidates received by May 6 will be included on the printed ballot. Any others may be nominated from the floor, but will have to be write-in candidates. can-didates. The four positions open for election are chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer. The four incumbents have declared their intention to run re-election. They include the following: Bob Stringham, chair, of Provo; La Von Laursen, vice chair, of American Fork; Vera B. Nielsen, secretary, of Orem; and C. Wynn Everett, treasurer, of Mapleton. Officers are elected for two-year terms. County delegates who were elected at the 1988 mass meetings will continue to serve at this year's convention. Dr. Gary C. Bryner, BYU professor of political science, will give the keynote address. He will talk about challenges that Utah will be addressing in the coming decade. Candidates for state party offices are also expected to attend. The run for state chair is heating up, with several names circulating. Jim Davis, mayor of South Salt Lake and candidates last year for Lt. Governor; Peter Billings, a Salt Lake attorney; and Marvin Davis, chief organizer for Jesse Jackson's presidential bid in Utah last year, are all serious candidates. Current chair Randy Horiuchi does not expect to run again, but might change his mind. |
