Holladay. West Jordan, Logan, Price and Brigham City Sports Shorts Is Pleasant Grove High School ready for 4-- A status? By MARY COONS There have been comments made about the new 4A classification of Pleasant Grove High School. Some of the comments are made at the school, by students, athletes, teach-ers and coaches. You can also hear comments from parents and fans in the stands. A sampling at a recent PGHS football game was both positive and negative. Some feel as though that PG would have fared better if they had been given a year or two to increase their student population. Others say that they think that it will "toughen up" PG's athletes, teaching them to play against stronger competition, and improv-ing their skill level. I personally think that it is rough on the kids. They are having a tough time competing. We should be beating those who moved up from 3A with us, such as Timpview and Provo, but several of the teams are even having hard time compet-ing against them. I do agree that the better the competition, the better you CAN play. The athletes need to realize that what they do is in the larger part in their heads. They have to beat the competition in their heads, or psychologically before they can beat them on the field or the court. The coaches have expressed this to their teams. We have some of the best athletic coaches in the state at PGHS. I know that they are trying to make the best of a difficult situ-ation, but they must have the un-failing loyalty of their athletes. We have some real talent, and we can play better than we have - but that is the decision of the athletes. Congratulations to a town that continues to support their Vikings. We fill the stadium and the gym with our support and caring. I see all of us continuing in our support, continuing to believe in these kids of ours, continuing to help them to believe in themselves. It might be tough, but Pleasant Grove is a class community. We can all help by attending their games, and letting them know that they will go on to dominate 4A as they did 3A! Jayvees, sophomores shut out Timpview By JACK HILL Danny Turner scored a touch-down and Danny Hartle kicked the extra point to boost the PG junior varsity to a 7-- 0 win over Timpview last Thursday. In the sophomore game, Ben Morris scored three times on run-ning plays and Nathan Jolley caught a 45-yar- d touchdown pass from Bucky Thomas as the sophs rolled over Timpview 27-- 0. The sophs picked off four Thun-derbir- d passes. Todd Baldwin, Gage Hansen, Gary Sanderson and Robby Mayo each intercepted a pass to help the sophs dominate the game. Both teams play Thursday with the sophomores at Provo and the jayvee hosting the Bulldogs in Viking Stadium at 4 p.m. |
