Show District to hold makeup day Nov. 22 lhe Alpine bchool District will hold school on Wednesday, Nov. 22, to make up for the day lost when schools were closed because of the teacher strike. School officials said Nov. 22, the day before the traditional Thanksgiving holiday is to begin, was originally scheduled as a teacher compensation day time off to compensate teachers for time spent in evening parent-teacher sessions. The decision on the makeup day was made during dur-ing the board's public input sessions held Tuesday at Greenwood Elementary School in American Fork. Blake Evans, a member of the school, in placing the item on the agenda of the meeting, said, "It was necessary to close the schools the day of the strike in order to insure the safety and well-being of the students. "While we could apply to the state for an exemption exemp-tion from the 180 school day requirement, we feel it necessary to hold school the required 180 days." Dr. Steven Baugh, district superintendent, also encouraged the board to make up the lost day. "Kids need that day of school," he said. "We want the best possible education for our students and that means that every day is important." |
