Land Devel-opment Code Review Published in the Pleasant Grove Review, Oct. 26, 1989 Gypsy Moth control areas are outlined at meeting of agencies Nearly 30 specialists represent-ing local, state and federal agen-cies met on Oct. 17 to kick off their planning for a 1990 control cam-paign against the invading gypsy moth. The control area may total at least 65,000 acres in Salt Lake, Utah and Davis counties, accord-ing to Van Burgess, director of plant industry with the Utah Depart-ment of Agriculture (UDA). In 1989, spraying covered less than 1,300 acres. Burgess said trapping results from throughout the state showed three main areas of infestation: eastern Salt Lake county, especially on Forest Service land east of the Mount Olympus Cove area; south-eastern Davis county, mostly in Bountiful around the area sprayed by the city of Bountiful this sum-mer; and an area around the mouth of Provo Canyon. In the two-pa- rt meeting this week, members of the Utah gypsy moth coordinating committee heard reports and saw maps of 1989 trap-ping results, reviewed effects of the spray program on the Salt Lake county butterfly population, and UDA; and quarantine, Tom Crowe, U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspec-tion Service (APHIS). Aerial spraying in Salt Lake county in May 1989 and ground spraying done by the cities of Provo and Bountiful was very effective in killing gypsy moth larvae in the control areas. Control efforts next spring will be aimed at eradicating the pests wherever they are known to exist in Utah. Officials estimate that it will take four to five years for complete eradication. Gypsy moths first appeared in the United States several years ago, defoliating and killing tens of millions of acres of hardwood for-ests in the northeastern states. Since then, they have spread across the country to Utah, Oregon and Cali-fornia They threaten public forest land, orchards, and landscaping in the Beehive State. Burgess points out that they not only do great financial and watershed damage but are a nuisance to homeowners. discussed the cooperative state " federal quarantine still in effect in , the Cove area of Salt Lake county. During the last part of the ses-sion, the group elected following chairmen to head several study committees workingon 1990 plans: spray boundaries, Steve Munson, U.S. Forest Service; pesticide se-lection, Joe Beckstrand, UDA; environmental assessment, Jim Cook, U.S. Forest Service; public relations, Larry Sagers, Utah State University Cooperative Extension Service; contract preparation, Burgess; trapping, Mark Quilter.
