Show Sophomores come from behind to win Pleasant Grove scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes to come from behind and beat Springville 14-6 in sophomore football Thursday. Afler a defensive first half that was played on the Springville side of the 50, the Red Devils put together a drive that resulted in a touchdown pass from 35 yards out. Springville elected to go for two points on the try, but Jason Jensen and B.J. McAllister plus a host of other Vikes stopped the runner short, leaving the score at 6-0 for i Springville. ' With seven minutes to play in the game, PG forced Springville to i punt. The snap was muffed, but the Red Devil punter got off a line drive punt that bounced over the head of the PG return man and rolled to the Viking 17. A screen pass to Donell Hooley gained 12 for a first down on a crucial third and 6 situation. David Johnston ran for another first down as the Viking offensive line began to take control of the line of scrimmage. scrim-mage. One play later, Glen Montgomery Mon-tgomery kept the ball on an option right and outraced the defendcers to the corner of the end zone to tie the score with less than four minutes left to play. Mark Julkunen gave the Vikes the lead, 7-6, with a perfect extra point kick. Mongomery came up with an interception to give the Vikes possession at the Springville 40 and with the clock running, PG again drove to the end zone with Mongomery scoring on a one-yard sneak with 1:50 to play. Julkunen kicked the point after and the Vikes were on top 14-6. Springville went to their bag of trick plays following the kickoff and completed the "hook and lateral" pass and pitch play for a 23-yard gain. After an incomplete pass, the Red Devils tried the play again, only to have Hooley intercept the "lateral" to end the drive. "Our defense and punter, Ray Overson, kept us in the game until those two final drives," said Jack Hill, Viking sophomore coach. Hill pointed out that Matt Gover and McAllister, inside linebackers, had especially good games for PG. "Gover seems to be everywhere the ball is and McAllister had some great tackles." Hill said. The sophomores play at Payson tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Payson sophs are coached by former PG assistant John Wardenburg. |
