Ann Topham, left, president of the Pleasant Grove Ambulance Association, accepts a baby quilt from, L-- Mary Jensen, Ada Cherry and Edith West. These senior citizens made the quilt. It will be given to the next baby that the ambulance crews have to deliver. Topham elected president of P.G. EMS Ann Topham is the new presi-dent of the Pleasant Grove Ambu-lance Association. The long time member of the organization, Ann is the first woman president of the Associa-tion. She has been a member since 1976. Ann is a registered nurse in the Emergency Room at the American Fork Hospital. "My work as an ' EMT is an extension of my work in the hospital," she said. In 1986, Ann was honored as the EMT Instructor of the Year for the state of Utah. As an EMT Instruc-tor she has taught hundreds of EMTs on the Wasatch Front and in Duchesne County. She has served on the American Heart (CPR) Affiliate Faculty, the Utah County EMS Board, the Tri-Cit- y EMS Board and has been nominated to be on the Utah State EMS Board. She teaches CPR to high school students with the Utah Emergency Training Council. In the Pleasant Grove Ambu-lance Association, she has served as training officer, president-elec- t and EMT instructor. Ann'shusband, Paul, has been a member ofPGEMS since 1974. "We have been in the association the longest of any of the current mem-bers," Ann stated. The couple has five children, all who do a good job with first aid and CPR. Ann said that one of the continu-ing problems the organization has is to be able to man enough teams during the daytime hours. She said that since so many women in the organization have had to go to work, it is harder to find people who can take the day shifts. Continual training and upgrad-ing of the EMTs is a goal that they are working on. The association plans to acquire a new ambulance, perhaps some-time this month. A restructuring of fees is also being considered. Rec. department sets baton classes Some fun fall and Christmas performances are being planned for the Pleasant Grove Recreation Dept. Baton Corps. If you want to join the fun, then sign up for the Baton Classes being held on Fri-days at 4 to 5 p.m., starting Sept. 16, at the Pleasant Grove Recrea-tion Department. In addition to learning a show routine, the curriculum will in-clude basic twirls, tricks, rolls and tosses, as well as basic strut, drill downs, and rules and regulations for competing in state contests. The teacher is Florence Adams, a registered B.B.U. (Utah State Baton Teachers Association) and USTA instructor. She is also direc-tor for the awarding winning Blue Crystals Dance and Baton Corps. Before the eight week session is over, a nationally known twirling consultant will be coming to give the corps a specialized show and competition workshop. To register, call the Pleasant Grove Recreation Dept. at 785-617- and for any questions, call Florence Adams at 785-101- 3. Free social security, pre-retireme- nt meeting slated at UVRMC auditorium Anyone nearing retirement will want to attend a meeting at the West Clark Auditorium (above lab) of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. The meeting will be held Thur-sday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. A social security representative will discuss requirements for benefits, how to file a claim, and other important topics. In addition, information will be provided on nutrition and health and leisure time activities. The meeting is designed for area residents age 55 and older. The meeting will be limited to 40 people, so call 7 for reservations. Admission is free. |
