Show Those donkeys played for hours without an accident cannot reproduce itself. I know that if you are stubborn or dumb or both you are often referred ' to as a donkey. I have been called that a time or two. A donkey is noted for its loud and obnoxious braying. In tenth grade chorus we had to learn the "Donkey Serenade" and we sang it for our parents at an evening program and one of the guys on the top row of the risers almost fainted. Farmers used to have donkey's pull their plows sometimes. I'll bet it took a long time if the animal decided to be stubborn for an hour or two. I always think of that story they tell of the farmer who's would not do his thing. The Is:, went up and hit the donkey kj the head and the donkejtegJI work. I had always wanted to go to one of these but have never been able to make it. This year I put everything else aside and went. It was one of the funnest things I've been to in a long time. Those little donkeys were just like all donkeys, stubborn. They just sauntered along when they did move. They had no gears higher than slow. Most of the time they were in a stall. It seemed that the riders (or players, although they were not at all like any basketball players I ever saw before) had to either be on the donkey or holding to it when they went after the ball. It is rather difficult to hold the reins with one hand and catch a pass from another player with the other and not lose it. Therefore the ball hit the floor a lot and, unless you were a trick rider who could hang to the floor with your legs wrapped around the donkey so you didn't fall off, you had to jump off the animal, hold to its rein and try to grab the ball with one hand. A good stubborn donkey would not allow you to do this and some of those little gals who were playing could not get them to budge at all. The faculty came through with a big win in the fourth and one of their number, Jack Hill, received the award for most entertaining player. Actually, he cheated is what he did. He would snatch ball's right out of the hands of another player. He should have been called for a foul, but then he wasn't the only one. Some of those guys picked on those poor little cheerleaders something awful. I talked with Tanya Harrison after the game and she said it was a lot of fun. She liked being picked on, I guess. I am sure it was fun but I am glad I was not one of the players. It was more fun watching the others make fools of themselves on those donkeys. The floor was protected from the hooves by little leather shoes that each donkey wore. One animal lost his shoe and the game had a temporary tem-porary delay while it was put back on. I kept expecting the donkey's to have an accident. They did not. How did they do that? I have not had a lot of experience with donkeys. I know that they use them to go down the steep trails to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I know that if you mix one with a horse you get a mule and a mule Some of the boys did not have much luck, either. To make a legal basket, the player had to be on board the donkey. This was a major accomplishment. In the first quarter, the cheerleaders played the senior boys and lost. Then the faculty played the KPGR radio students and the faculty won. There was a great male drill team during the halftime. They could have been an advertisement for Fruit of the Loom. The two losers played each other in the third quarter and the cheerleaders lost again. |
