' -; v-s i- I f , t V m - ! ! i i . - Primary grade winners in the Alpine School District Knowledge Bowl are Grovecrest students and coach, L-R, Coach Christine Kelly, Ryan Merrill, Shane Lloyd, Zack Parry, Ben Turley, Ryan Wilkins and Danny Smalley. Grovecrest students win Knowledge Bowl This is the fourth year Alpine School District has held a Knowledge Bowl competition, however, this is the first year Grovecrest Elementary has participated par-ticipated and they won first place in the primary division. They had a team from 4 to 6 grades and a team from second to third grades. The upper division grades had a study guide eight pages long. The lower division grades also had a study guide but it was not as comprehensive. Each team had six members and the study guides were divided up between these six members. Each was to research and study his own section and become an "expert" on that area. the morning. They played three games and did an excellent job. They really held their own, however, on the last game, they lost which cut them from the competition. com-petition. The members of the team were Robert Lin (team Captain), Aaron Murdock, Kimball Lyaman, Brandon Pipken, Kenneth Ormsbee, and Danny Stirling. The lower grade teams competed that afternoon and did well enough to complete the next Saturday, April 16, in the championship rounds. They were very well prepared. Questions were asked such as "Which is the closest star to the earth?" "What is the largest tree?" "How are igneous rocks formed?" "What organ does the food enter after it leaves the stomach"1 m the questions for this year's ! petition were on science. Ten minutes before the cb pionship round was to take nlats all the power in the building ! out. This added greatly "J tension and anxiety of all tk. involved. Finally, a half hour later the power came back on. Durk that dark half hour, a lot of minute cramming took placed, both teams. By 2 last Saturday afternoon th team from Grovecrest was pronounced the district champions of the lower grade division. The boys of this great team art Shane Lloyd, Ryan Merrill, Ryail Wilkins, Ben Turley, Danny Smalley and Zack Parry. However, after a couple of study sessions, it became obvious that the lower grade division would do better if each team member were to learn the entire study guide, which they did. They met three times a week-two hours on Monday, and one on Tuesday and Thursday. The schedule went on for about five weeks. The first competition was on April 9 at Orchard Elementary in Orem.
