The following are five different ways drugs work: Block nerve impulses: Local anesthetics such as lidocaine and procaine prevent sensations of pain or discomfort from being transmitted from body tissues to the brain. Stimulate nerves: Nicotine, caffeine and a variety of medicines used to control symptoms of depression cause various nerves to be stimulated in one way or another. The effect depends on which nerves are stimulated. Affect foreign cells: An-tibacterial agents such as sulfonamides and penicillin selectively kill or prevent growth of bacteria. Replace deficiencies: A variety of natural and synthetic drug products simply replace or supplement substances that are not present in the body in suf-ficient quantities. Examples include insulin, estrogen, thyroid and many vitamins and minerals. Constrict vessels: Some nose drops contain medicines which constric! blood vessels and shrink tissues, thereby relieving congestion. c . .
