"CPR combines mouth-to-mouth breathing, to get air into the lungs, with vigorous chest compressions to maintain vital organs," she continued. con-tinued. Used only if a person is unconscious, CPR must be started within four minutes of arrest. In one area, a family untrained in CPR owed the life of their baby to a neighbor who was able to revive the infant. Touched by an emergency so , close to home, one grandma from the same neighborhood recruited her entire family to learn CPR during the May campaign. "We had a 10-year-old who practically had to do a handstand to compress the Resusci-Annie," recalled Mrs. Nuttall. "His little ribs were so small, I don't know where he got the air from to inflate her lungs!" Even a two-year-old received a badge for his efforts when he was able to make the chest flutter on the Resusci-Baby. "CPR is valuable, but only at a given moment," cautioned Mrs. Nuttall. "These techniques should be reviewed yearly in a community class, in order to refresh techniques and to remain current with continuous con-tinuous improvements in CPR techniques.
