A teacher holds tightly to a rope attached to top of balloon to keep the wind from blowing the billowing canopy on top of the curious children. Hot air is introduced into the balloon after the fan has ex-panded the balloon to its 105,000 cubic feet. Kids take time off to watch take off , xs , - Xs- ! ( . xl : ?V .Mxxv,l 'i " - . The bank's floating billboard has been using local school yards as a take-of- f point - and have been invited students to see how the huge balloon functions at the same time. "We have been trying to show kids what it's like to fly a hot air balloon and explain the principles of balloon flying," said Brian Kelly, part owner with Erwin Oretli in the airborne advertisement. Last week the balloon lifted off from the grounds of Shelley Elementary in American Fork, but not before the entire studentbody had a chance to gather around and watch the balloonists inflate the larger-than-norm- hot air balloon. Oretli, who was piloting the craft, ex-plained to the school children how the balloon operated, and kept them out of the way of canopy fabric as it was inflated with a large fan. Then the flame was lit, lifting the balloon and gondola, complete with passengers, off the ground and into the sky. The Bank of American Fork balloon uses several departure sites throughout the county and the state. Five take-off- s are planned this week - one of them in Delta, according to Kelly. "It's a lot prettier than a highway sign. There's a magic quality about it," he said. While the balloon enjoys several departure sites, landing sites are even more varied - since the flight path of the vehicle is determine by air currents.
