Front: Head Coach Bruce Bushnell, Brian Larsen, Cody Bell, Corey Carter, Shawn Young, Robert Fisher, Scott Jensen. The sophs went 10-0 in Region 8 play and 15-4 for the season. Vikes split with Pioneers The Lady Vikings ended their regular season with the junior varsity losing a heart breaker, 49-43, 49-43, and the varsity winning a thriller, 68-67. In the JV game, the girls jumped out to a 15-9 first quarter lead. However, the second quarter was all Lehi, as the Vikings shots wouldn't fall and they made some costly mistakes. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, the Lady Vikings made a run at Lehi to trail by five, Z7-22 at the half. They continued to battle back but just could not regain the lead during the second half as Lehi maintained their lead to win 4943. j Jayleen Walker led the young ; ladies in scoring with 13 points, Anita Larsen had 8, Kim Woffinden ;y i had 7, Melissa Bennett had 5, v' Sharron Brady had 4 and Trin Card ;e ! 'nadl. ly I The overall season record was 10-10 10-10 and more important, they were 6- nt 4 in region play, where they defeated every region team except i Spanish Fork. The varsity contest featured almost everything that could happen in a game. Both teams shot a combined 64 free throws as the Vikings made 22 of 38 and the Lady Pioneers made 15 of 26. It was a continual track meet, with both teams running the ball up the court almost on every single possession, keeping the game moving and exciting for the fans. The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to have Lehi respond to take a 10-4 lead by midway through the first quarter. After a timeout the Vikings came soaring back to end the first quarter tied, 16-16. The Pioneers then jumped to a seven point lead during the second quarter and led by five at halftime, 39-34. The third quarter was pretty well even as each team traded ' basket for basket. It seemed like the Vikings could never get closer than two points, as the end of the third quarter found the Lady Pioneers leading by two, 54-52. The game stayed a two-point contest until, with around three minutes to go, Jayleen Walker made a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup to tie the score. From that point on, the Vikings seemed to sense that it was their ball game to win. Debbie Fisher made two critical free throws, Lila Fugal and Kim Woffinden made a couple of key blocks as time was expiring to give them their hard earned 10th victory of the year and fifth Region 8 win. Lila Fugal led the balanced Lady Vikings scoring with 17, Debbie Fisher , had 14, Cherylnn Johnson had 13, Jayleen Walker had 12, Kim Woffinden had 6, Kathy Maughan had 4 and Melissa Bennett had 2. Several firsts were accomplished in the game with four players scoring in double figures, making. 22 free throws in a game and most points ever scored in a game, 68. Everyone is encouraged to come and support the Lady Viking team at the state tournament being held at South High School. |
