If cancer strikes your home you wonder, why does this have to happen to me? It is frightening to Ihink of all the possible things that could go wrong and just what the future will hold. The important thing to remembr is 50 of all cancers are now curable. Early detection is the best insurance of overcoming the disease. Services are available through the American Cancer Society to the cancer patient and his family. A cash grant is available to those who qualify of $150 to help with medication or travel expenses for treatment. Equipment is loaned to cancer patients, including hospital beds, wheel chairs, commodes and many other items. A program has been designed to help mastectomy patients called the "Reach to Recovery" program, and is designed to help women who have had breast surgery. Trained volunteers who have had cancer visit the patient in the hospital. Reassurance and services are available to the patient and the family. Delora oversees all the programs dealing with services to patients and each city in the county has their own service and rehabilitation chairman who works under Delora's guidance. Pleasant Grove's chairman is Julie Hamling. Other local residents who make up the Pleasant Grove ACS Cancer Committee include Gary Kovacs, president; Janet Puckett, secretary; Denna Colyar, public Delora Pugh education; Ken Robbins, public information; Robert Aland, crusade; with Marlene Nelson and Sandy Fugal as residential chair-men. Laurel Kindred Laurel Kindred given honor Laurel Kindred has been selected as Employee of the Month at Lindon Care and Training Center. Laurel was born at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. She grew up in Lindon and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School. She attended the Utah Technical College in Provo in the Nursing Depart-ment. She is the mother of a three-year-ol- d daughter, Brianne. Laurel began working at Lindon Care and Training Center on Aug. 16, 1979 as the secretary of resident finances. In August of 1980, she became the Business Office Manager. In June of 1982 she became the Assistant Administrator and maintains that position today. Laurel holds other positions in the community which include secretary for the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce, and, for the past year, has been supervising and managing apartment buildings for the men-tally retarded. Laurel enjoys playing the piano, embroidery and reading. She especially enjoys being a mother. Laurel is a very faithful, dedicated key employee. She rarely takes time off and is an integral part of Lindon Care and Training Center's progress. " Sharon was born Nov. 10, 1944 in Salt Lake City. She lived at Lar-sen- 's Nursing Home before coming to Lindon Care and Training Center. Her mother lives in Salt Lake City and comes down about once a month to visit with Sharon and take her out to lunch. Sharon holds a small job here at the facility. She is to help take dirty clothes to the washroom. Sharon needs very little reminding to complete this task. She enjoys swimming, bowling, singing, showering, going to rodeos, field trips and being a cowgirl. Sharon will go around the facility with her cowboots, guns and hat all in place. She also enjoys each and every holiday. She will tell you every month what holiday is coming up next. Sharon loves to stand by the doors and welcome the staff as they come to work. She then will say "Hi," arid talk to them while walking in. Seven of Utah's most gifted young pianists will be featured at a special ; concert Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m.' in the American Fork 21st Ward, 261 N. 900 East. The musicians range in age from 7 to 13 and each has been recognized for outstanding accomplishment from such groups and competition as the Utah Music Teachers Association, the Wasatch Arts Festival, the University of Utah Summer Arts Festival, Utah County and State Fairs, the Young Keyboard Artists and Stravinsky Awards International Piano Com-petitions. The featured performers include three children of Craig and Irene Peery of Provo. Joseph Peery, Christie Peery and Samual Peery. All have performed and won awards at several competitions, and all have studied at the Peabody Con-servatory of Music in Baltimore, Md. Also performing will be Eddie Liu and Michael Liu, the sons of Harold and Maggie Liu of Orem, Janae Codner, daughter of John and Nancy codner ofd Provo and Amy Greenwood, daughter of Dale W. and Sharon Greenwood. There is no charge for admission to the recital, and light refreshments will be served. |
