Postmaster plans to prosecute mailbox vandals People who have vandalized local mailboxes could be headed for stiff fines and even prison sentences. According to Pleasant Grove Postmaster Richard Wollums, at least 45 mailboxes have been vandalized in recent months. In many cases, it appears the boxes have been hit with some o.bject to smash the box. Also, some boxes have been hit by cars. Mail from inside the boxes have been torn and thrown into nearby fields. "I think in most instances the vandals are young people who feel damaging mail and mailboxes is a prank," he said. "But it's no joke. It's a serious offense." Postmaster Wollums said that people who damage mailboxes and mail can receive fines of up to $1,000 and prison sentences of up to three years. People who steal mail, or who possess mail stolen by someone else, can be fined up to $2,000 or imprisoned for as long as five years, or both. "I hope all parents will teil their children that mail is personal and private, and that serious consequences con-sequences can result from damaging mail and mailboxes," said the postmaster.
