Pleasant Grove jumped on top early, fell behind, and then stormed back to beat visiting Lehi, 9-- in a rain-delaye- d game Friday. Tracy Flinders was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning for Pleasant Grove. Matt Norman then lined a shot past the shortstop that rolled deep in the alley in left. Flinders raced home from first and Norman wound up on third. Shane Phillips, the number three hitter, followed with a two-ru- n smash that landed on the hill over the left field fence. Before the Pioneers could get anyone out, the Vikes were on top 3-- 0 and looked to be handing Lehi another double digit pasting. But the Pioneers' designated hitter, Jon Tingey, opened the third inning with a high drive to straightaway center that cleared the fence. Phillips, Viking centerfielder, could only watch helplessly as the ball bounced off Armistead's cinder block building. The Pioneers added two more third inning runs on a walk to Price and singles from Carter and Hadfield. When the Vikes took their turn, the first two hitters, Paul Bronson and Shawn Bezzant, lashed doubles to put Pleasant Grove ahead 4-- The Pleasant Grove team then loaded the bases, but a pop-u-p and a strikeout ended the inning. Again, Lehi took the offensive with Hansen singling and stealing second. Price doubled in Hansen to tie the score at four. Price moved to third on a ground-bal- l out and Hadfield picked up another rbi with a sacrifice fly to score Price. The Pioneers were on top 5-- Flinders led off the Vikinghalf of the fourth with a single up the middle that just got by the Lehi shortstop. The junior third baseman then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Phillips drew a walk to put Vikings at the corners. Coach Jon Hoover called for Phillips to steal second and the throw was high and went into centerfield. Flinders came home with Phillips racing to third. Coach Hoover waved the senior speedster home and in a SHAWN BEZZANT pulls up at third base. Bezzant pitched a com-plete game victory over Lehi and had two rbi's in the win. Photo by John Hill. close play, Phillips was safe with a beautiful headfirst slide at the plate. The two runs put Pleasant Grove on top to stay, . Tingey delivered a two-ou- t single in the fifth for Lehi, but Bezzant struck out Turner for the third out. In the sixth, Flinders, who seemed to lead off every inning for Pleasant Grove, homered. A walk and an error put two Vikes on base for Bezzant. After one pitch, a strike, the rain forced the umpire, Lani Haacke, to call a rain delay and everyone ran for the only shelter around, the cement covered dugouts. After a April shower, the game resumed and Bezzant drove home Phillips and Bronson with a single. Coupled with the Viking win at Payson Wednesday, Pleasant Grove moves to 3-- 1 in Region 8 and a first place tie with Payson at Spanish Fork. At Payson, Shawn Story went the distance to beat the Lions 6-- Bronson had a multiple-ru- n homer for one of the Vikings big hits. Here's the way Region 8 stands after four games.
