JiiilSliiiiiiM 'v--'- ' Schub appears with Utah Symphony the Chase Fine Arts Center at Utah State University in Logdan at 8 p.m. on Thursday. The Utah Symphony will be performing the Mozart Symphony No. 33 in B flat, K.319 for the first time at these concerts. It was one of the last symphonies Mozart wrote in Salzburg and was completed in 1779. The Piano Concerto No. 3 by Bela Bartok was completed in 1945 just months prior to the composer's death. Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra was written in 1885, during a period that marked his return to pianistic composition and witnessed com-pletion of his Prelude, Chorale and Fugue (1884) and Prelude, Aria and Finale for Solo Piano (1886-87- ). The Seventh Symphony is Sibelius' last work in this form and this will be the Utah Symphony's first performance of this work. It was completed in March, 1924. Joseph Silverstein, Music Director of the Utah Symphony, is internationally acclaimed as both a conductor and a violinist. He served as assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony from 1971 until this season and was also concert master of the orchestra as well as music director of its chamber group, the Boston Chamber Players. Andre-Mich- Schub has per-formed with the symphonies of New York, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas and many others. He has performed in Japan and Australia, as well as in Europe. Born in France, the The Utah Symphony will take its music on the road to Logan and Ogden before giving two 8 p.m. performances at Symphony Hall on Nov. 16-1- Joseph Silverstein will conduct the orchestra and Andre-Mich- Schub, winner of the 1981 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will be soloist. The symphony will perform Mozart's Symphony No. 33 in B. flat, K.319 and the Symphony No. 7, Op. 105 by Sibelius. Mr. Schub will join the orchestra for Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Franck's Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra. The symphony will give the same programs' at the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14; and at Guest pianist Andre-Mich- el Schub is featured symphony soloist New Yorker came to the United States with his family when he was eight months old and began studying piano at age four with his mother. Hospice slates Edwards & Young Steve Young has accepted the role of honorary chairperson for the "Light Up a Life" Christmas tree event to benefit Hospice of Utah County. The tree lighting ceremony highlighted by a keynote speech from Lavell Edwards is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. in the Provo City Council Chambers. The Hospice tree, which will be lit by former BYU quarterback, Steve Young, will be located on the nor-theast corner of the Provo Center from Nov. 29 through Jan. 1. A gift of $10 will light a bulb on the massive, live Hospice tree in memory of a loved one who has died or in honor of a living friend. The first Hospice program in the United States was established in 1971 and now there are dver 1200 nationwide. Since its inception in 1983, Hospice of Utah County has helped over 500 patients and family members living in Utah County deal with the fear and loneliness that have too often been associated with the dying experience. Volunteers have donated over 4500 hours of service making over 1500 home visits. Hospice emphasizes pain and symptom control so ill people can live their last days as fully and comfortably as possible in their own homes, surrounded by family and friends. A goal of $10,000 has been set to support the Hospice's free services. 'J ' f - y: '"-- I wmimmmimimmmmim Lavell Edwards Steve Young Pageant plans dances A series of "Studio Dance Con-certs" for area teens will begin with the first benefit event at Utah Pageant of the Arts Center, 454 North Center, American Fork, on Saturday, Nov. 17. The teen dances will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. in Studio A, with music selected by teens. John Soderquist will man the sound system. Admission will be $2.50 per person and refreshments will also be sold, according to David Brockbank, pageant producing director, who will direct the dances. All, proceeds will be used to renovate and restore the Pageant Center, formerly the old American Fork High School building. All area teens are invited to attend the "Studio Dance Concerts." Local artists display work Verlaine Allen of American Fork, Betty Liston of Pleasant Grove, and Randy Blackburn and Nina Schumann of Lehi are among artists and sculptors whose work is on display at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center during November. The show, the first to be presented at the Medical Center; also includes the work of other past and present board members of the Utah Valley Artists Guild Nola DeJong Sullivan, Bert L. Fullmer, Roe Allman, Birdie Boyer Boorman, LouJean Carter, Darly Christensen, Marian Christensen, Leola Stewart, Bar bara Wardle and Dennis Zupan. The next show, December through January, will be open for all current members of the Guild, according to Jerry Sorensen, director of Public Relations at the Medical Center. Mr. Sorensen said-- the exhibit is the first of Utaho Valley Regional Medical Center's planned rotating public art exhibits. The exhibits will show original works from local artists andsculptors. The pieces are exhibited in the halls off the main lobby and between the Operating Room and Emergency Center. Many of the works are for sale through the ar-tists themselves. "We feel the exhibit greatly benefits the medical center, the' community and the artists,",. Mr. Sorensen said. "The art works beautify' our surroundings here and promote local culture, while the artists have a public place to show their work." ,' The first show, through Novem-ber, features works of the past and present board members of the Utah Valley Artists Guild, he said.
