Show Harvey edges Hogtand by only 34 votes With the absentee ballots all counted, Dave Harvey edged Bill Hoglund by 34 voles to win a seat on the Alpine School District board of education. That race was left uncertain after the Nov. 6 general election, when Harvey led Hoglund by 31 votes. Fifteen absentee ballots figured into the final numbers - with nine of those going to Harvey. Although the official canvass won't be completed until Friday, Utah County Clerk William Huish said the figures would not change. "That's official, and that's what the figures will be when it comes out," Huish said. "I did that particular par-ticular canvass personally because of the close race." He said the ballots would not be recounted, a move that requires a difference of less than one vote per voting district. There are 26 districts in the school board precinct. Harvey will replace Dan Fugal on the board representing precinct 3. Fugal chose not to run for reelection. The precinct covers all of Pleasant Grove and Cedar Hills and the 12 most southern voting districts in American Fork. Harvey was working on his Pleasant Grove farm Tuesday when the results were announced, and could not be reached for comment. Hoglund said he accepted the decision as the will of the voters. "I think one of my big disappointments disap-pointments is the number of people who didn't vote," Hoglund said. "It's the apathy of almost 50 percent of the voters that didn't vote in the school board race. That's the thing that concerns me more than anything." The election tally shows that 56 percent of the voters made a decision in the school board race, where the presidential election drew votes from well over 80 percent of the registered voters. |
