Show Utah Consumer Protection Dept. gives warnings During the past six months Consumer Protection has been investigating Wide America Telecom Systems Inc. WATS, a Utah Corporation. Wide American Telecom Systems Inc. is in the business of selling and installing long distance . telephone services in Utah as well as throughout the United States. Information In-formation received by the Division indicates there are more than 25,000 customers in at least 13 states who have paid $25 to $150 each for long distance service. WATS also provides a business opportunity to consumers who purchase a franchise and become an affiliatepartner of WATS. At least 34 franchises have been sold throughout the United States. Cost of these franchises range from i. $140,000 to $500,000. The Division has received approximately ap-proximately 200 complaints from consumers who have not received the long distance telephone services as represented from independent marketing agents who have not received commissions as represented, and from affiliates who have not received equipment to operate the service. On Nov. 14, 1984 the Division of Consumer Protection issued a Cease and Desist Order to Wide America Telecom Systems Inc., Bill L. Means and the parent company of WATS, West America Energy Inc., Boyd L. Jentzch for failing to file the proper business opportunity disclosure papers. On Nov. 16, 1984 the Division of Consumer Protection filed in Third District Court two (2) class actions alleging violations of the Consumer Sales Practices Act. |
