Nationals win State 'B' fastpitch softball championship Nationals . defeated Steve Peterson Interiors twice Tuesday, August 7, to win the State 'B' Fastpitch Softball Championship, a crown they also won in 1983. Both teams play in the Pleasant Grove City league. The two undefeated teams met at 6:30 p.m. in the first of the two games. Petersons jumped on top on hits by Craig Carter and Kim Walker. But in the fourth inning, Warren deLisle ripped a grand slam home run to put Nationals ahead 4-- Hite by Gordie Smith, Jim Stoneman and a Peterson error 6-- Rutledge, Doug Hooley, Carter and Walker pounded out the hits. DJ's picked up two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings with Maynard and Christensen driving in runs in the fifth while Hooton lined a 3-- 2 pitch into center field to drive in both sixth inning runs after two were out. Hill got the top of DJ's batting order to pop out in the seventh to give Petersons a second shot at Nationals in the double elimination tourney. The defending State Champs were not kind to Hill who started on Championship. By winning the State title two years in a row, Nationals will now have to move up to the 'A' classification next season. Top finishers in the tournament were: 1. Nationals; 2. Steve Peterson Interiors; 3. DJ Club; 4. Rebels; 5. Interstate Transmissions. The three local teams, Nationals, Steve Peterson Interiors and Interstate Transmission qualified for the Western Regions Regionals this weekend in Riverton, Wyoming. loaded the bases for deLisle, Nationals shortstop, who drilled an 0-- 1 pitch over the centerfield fence. In the fifth, Smith powered a pitch over the green left field wall for a two run home run that put Nationals ahead 6-- With two outs, Petersons loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on three straight hits from Walker, Weldon Neilson and Malin Branin. However, winning pitcher, Dave Clingo recovered to get the third out and send Petersons into the loosers bracket. In that game Petersons took on DJ Club from Salt Lake City, a winner over the Rebels, for a second chance at the Nationals. Playing without Craig Green, their number one pitcher, Petersons went with Jack Hill who had not been on the mound in three weeks. The slow, slower and slowest pitches from Hill and great defensive plays in the field, helped Petersons sneak by DJ's 6-- 4. In the first inning, an error and doubles by Branin and Hal Gillman got Petersons off to a 2-- 0 start. Karl Rutledge boosted the lead to 3-- 0 by driving in Cameron Tolman in the second inning. Gillman's single in the third scored Neilson for a 4-- 0 Petersons lead and in the fourth, four Peterson hits produced two runs and boosted the local teams lead to the mound for Petersons. In the first inning, deLisle, Kent Chipman, Lynn Clingo and Smith belted base hits to get Nationals off to an early 30 lead. In the third Smith and Scott Fletcher singled to start the inning and later scored. Hill was lifted for Bud Nielson. Nielson was tagged for only one run over the remainder of the game but the 5-- 1 lead was enough for Nationals. Petersons got a run in the second inning with Rutledge driving in Gillman and then pulled to within a single run, 5-- 4 in ths fifth. Hooley and Carter singled to produce one run and with two outs, Brannin tripled in Carter. Gillman then scored Branin with a hit. In the sixth, Tolman hit safely to start the inning. Coach Bob Fletcher, Nationals manager, lifted Kay Thayne and brought in Dave Clingo from right field to pitch. Clingo struck out the next two Peterson hitters and got the thi--d out on an infield pop up. Nationals posted an insurance run in their half of the seventh with Stoneman driving in designated hitter Smith. Smith had picked up his third hit of the game in leading off the inning. Clingo got the first three Petersons hitters in the seventh to end the game and earn Nationals their second straight State We're cutting the price xT" of the Husqvarna 181. 1 0(N If you're a professional wood cutter and lvfl) you're in the market for a new chain saw, the fc-- 1 V Husqvarna 181 is the saw for you.
