(t With only three teams left in the h tournament, the Royals took on the oip Orem Dhmatco squad and won the ' ' game by a score of 11-- setting up the championship games with the 5 undefeated A.F. Giants. With the Ilik championship on the line, the P.G. j, Royals handed the Giants their ept; first tournament loss with a 6-- 4 win, thus making it necessary to play another game on this championship day. Playing with . . one loss each, and battling for the state championship under the lights at Rotary Park in American Fork, the Royals jumped out to a 5-- 1 lead after the first two innings and never looked back, coasting to an 8-- 4 victory and giving the Royals their first State Colt Championship ever. For the Royals it was a total team effort from game one, as the team combined good hitting with great pitching and defense. Gary Roberts led the Royals in tournament hitting as he went 14 for 25 at the plate for a .560 batting average, and Roberts drove in 10 runs in seven games. Derek Wright, who was voted the MVP of the tournament, turned in a gutsy performance, hustling the entire tournament, and actually played the last two games with two broken bones in his hands. Brent Mills, Gregg Bahr, and Brian Carter, the Royals pick-u- p pitcher from Nephi, aided the Royals cause offensively. A bright spot for the P.G. team was their consistently strong pitching throughout the tournament. Nick Starr and Jeff Harris picked up two wins apiece, and Brian Carter and Scott Mosher added another victory each. Nick Starr turned in the pitching performance of the tournament striking out' 15 Lehi batters in the third game of the tournament and came back in the championship game to strike out six A.F. Giants over the last three innings of play. Starr only walked four men the entire tournament while allowing . 11 hits in 13 innings. Jeff Harris - allowed only 14 hits over the 14 innings he worked and threw a 5 hitter in the opening round of the tournament against a very strong Orem Ogden Carpet team. Brian Carter, the Royals pick-u- p pitcher from Juab High in Nephi, was a bright spot for the local team, both in the pitching and hitting departments. Carter allowed only 13 hits in 16 innings and had a strong first three innings in the championship game. Scott Mosher, who still hadn't unpacked from a recent Babe Ruth tournament in Santa Maria, California, did a great job in defeating the A.F. Giants in a crucial game pitching a perfect game through the first four innings. The P.G. Royals, who were coached by Alan Bahr and Jim Starr, include Mark Bronson, Jeff Harris, Nick Starr, Brian Hansgen, Derek Wright, Gregg Bahr, Gary Roberts, Scott Mosher, Brent Mills, Cody Bell, Corey Carter, Travis Hansen, Eric Olsen, and Evan Thomas. The Royals finished the season with a record of 16 wins and 4 losses, and return every player off of their state championship team except Scott Mosher. i i a vw l i w ),.
