And that means no smoking during the first half. BYU is cooperating with the Utah County Unit of the American Lancer Society in launching the reat American Smokeout testivities and set a world record for the number of people "not smoking" at an outdoor sporting event. The number will be documented and sent to the Guiness Book of World Records John N. Mavros, chairman of the ACS board for Utah County, said the smokeless two hours will help fans to be aware of the Great American Smokeout celebrated nationwide on Thursday, Nov. 17. In conjunction with the Great American Smokeout, the Utah County ACS is sponsoring a day of festivities (Nov. 17) at the new Excelsior Hotel in Provo, culminated by a grand prize drawing of a five-da- y trip for two to Bermuda. Other prizes will also be given away in the drawings. Tickets for the drawings are being sold for $1 each at the Ex celsior and Showbiz Pizza in Orem beginning Saturday (Nov. 12). Winners of the grand prize will stay in the Bermudiana Hotel, a member of (he Truslhouse Forte chain which owns bolh hotels. Many of the hotels in the chain have g floors of rooms. The drawings will be held at 9 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 17) at the Excelsior's grand ballroom at the conclusion of a two-ho- free variety show being produced by Oneal Miner. During the day, special speakers will talk about cancer beginning at 9 a.m. with BYU quarterback Steve Young. As state ACS Youth Chairman, he has spoken to thousands of youth about the effects of smoking and chewing tobacco. Free ice cream provided by Meadow Gold Dairies will be served to children all day at the hotel. Booths and displays from various Utah County health agencies will be set up, movies will be shown all day, K-9- 6 radio will broadcast from the hotel from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a release of hundreds of balloons will take place at noon in con-junction with several schools in the county, Mavros said. The Great American Smokeout festivities will climax Saturday (Nov. 19) with a Conquer Cancer relay race between BYU student organizations and the University of Utah sororities and fraternities. The runners, who will get sponsors for the race, will leave Rice Stadium at 6 a.m. Team members will pass along a football to the next runners. The race will end at Cougar Stadium about noon before the beginning of the BYU-Uta- h football game. About 100 runners from each university will participate. Youth program encourages job skills The new Job Training Partne-rship Act program is now enc-ouraging young men and women between the ages of 16 to 21 to visit Die JTPA Career Guidance Center at 305 N. 200 West, Provo, to apply ior certification. Young people eligible for the JTPA program can participate in job skills training, personal, career and vocational counseling, conf-erences related to and job seeking-keepin- g skills and summer and year long employment possibilities. Also included are outdoor "confidence building" experiences such as mountain climbing, surv-ival treks and rapelling. A team of professional counselors associated with the Mountainland Association of Governments will be conducting the JTPA Youth Program. JTPA encourages all youth between 16 to 21 to visit Career Guidance and apply. AF Hospital offers free pregnancy tests American Fork Hospital is off-ering free pregnancy tests on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to noon al the hospital's laboratory. An early morning urine specimen will be needed. November pregnancy tests are on Ike 9th and the 23rd. The hospital is located at 170 North 1100 East in American Fork.
