MAYOR DAVID HOLDAWAY, CENTER, signs education week proclamation while Stan Harward, right, president of the Alpine Education Asociation, and Jan Lewis, regional PTA director, look on Alpine School District to observe American Education Week Alpine District schools join other schools throughout the nation at this time of year in what has been an annual nationwide observance. Pleasant Grove's Mayor David Holdaway signed a proclamation and claimed the week of November 1983, as American Education Week and urged all citizens to make a commitment to public education and to the future of Pleasant Grove's children by visiting their local public schools and by donating their time and talents to help make public schools even better. Stan Harward, President of the Alpine Education Association said, '"The students' of Alpine School District are receiving a quality education. Though the deterioration of public education described in 'A Nation at Risk' applies to many places throughout the United States, Alpine School District does not fit the pattern. Our teachers are dedicated and even though they teach extremely high dassloads, their extra effort and commitment has kept the quality up." Jan Lewis, Regional PTA Director said, "At this time, more than any other time, parents and educators have a great to opportunity cooperate together towards continued educational excellence. My hope is, that with the current educational emphasis, more parents will assume their share of the educational responsibility of their children." The proclamation read: Whereas, the public schools are an important and integral part of our society; and whereas, the concept of a free and equal education is an American tradition and this country's strength; and whereas, the students of today are the leaders of tomorrow; and whereas, all citizens have a responsibility to support the public schools; Now, therefore, I, David Holdaway, of Pleasant Grove do hereby proclaim November 13-1- 1983, as American Education Week and urge all citizens to make a commitment to public education and to the future of Pleasant Grove's children by visiting then-loca-l public schools and by donating their time and talents to help make the public schools even better.
