Show Handicapped Preschoolers Sought For BYU Laboratory Pre-schoolers with handicaps are being sought to participate in the fall program of the early childhood education laboratory at Brigham Young University. Nancy Thompson, special education coordinator, said the deadline for application is April 1. For more information, call 378-2057. 378-2057. She said that five percent of the laboratory enrollment is reserved for handicapped han-dicapped children aged three and a half (at time of entry) to not more than five. "Children are placed in a class with normal youngsters. This called 'mainstreaming,'" she exnlained "Tf desireable, a daily tutoring session of 30 minutes is designed for each child covering six broad development areas: fine motor (small muscle development), language, langua-ge, intellect, physical (large muscles), self-help self-help and social-personal skills." Some specific benefits beyond the normal preschool pre-school program will include "role modeling" for the special children in which they copy other children in a normal environment. |
